PRESS RELEASE

Jubilee Concerts – the Pontifical Sistine Chapel Choir
in the Basilica of St. Apollinare

(Vatican City) – The “Jubilee Concerts – Harmonies of Hope” of the “Jubilee is Culture” Programme continue, in preparation for the Holy Year.

On 22 December 2024, at 17.30, at the Basilica of St. Apollinare, the fourth musical event will take place offering a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the beauty of religious music. The Pontifical Sistine Chapel Choir, under the direction of Maestro Msgr. Marcos Pavan, will perform a programme that will pay homage to the great composers of the religious music tradition, including Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina – whose fifth centenary of birth will be celebrated in 2025 -, Msgr. Lorenzo Perosi and Cardinal Domenico Bartolucci.

Previously scheduled to be performed in the Church of Saint Ignatius, but due to the temporary unusability of part of the church, the event will now take place in the splendid setting of the Basilica of St. Apollinare at the Neronian-Alexandrine Baths, founded by Pope Hadrian I around 780.

The concert will take place at a moment of profound spiritual significance, just a few days before the opening of the Jubilee Year. The performance of the polyphonic compositions will offer participants an experience of authentic contemplation, guiding them in reflection on the mystery of faith and on the importance of music as an instrument of spiritual elevation and introspection.

The programme will feature performances of some of the finest Renaissance and modern compositions for choir, with a focus on the tradition of pontifical sacred music. The event will be free and open to the public, with no reservation required.
