Conference – Thursday 24 October 2024, at 16.00 – Celebrating Francis in the time of Francis

Franciscan echoes in the Vatican Pinacoteca, 800 years after the appearance of the stigmata

The conference will be followed by a visit to the Medieval section of the Vatican Pinacoteca

This particular Thursday at the Museums on 24 October, dedicated to the eighth centenary of the appearance of the stigmata, proposes to celebrate the extraordinary event, approaching it through the sources and artistic evidence of that long-ago 1224, in the time of Saint Francis, and in the time of Cardinal Ugolino de’ Conti dei Segni, the future Pope Gregory IX (1227-1241). It will be a special occasion to appreciate the Medieval section of the Vatican Pinacoteca in a new guise, intended to celebrate the Poverello of Assisi through a wall dedicated to him, and therefore also to his time: Hall I will, in fact, for the first time, host the mosaic with the face of Saint Luke, among the few surviving fragments of the ancient façade of the Vatican Basilica.

Entrance from Viale Vaticano upon presentation of the invitation from 15.30 to 16.00.
