The Management of the Vatican Museums on the occasion of the Centenary of the founding of the Paintings and Wooden Materials Restoration Laboratory

Has the pleasure of inviting you to the Press Conference for the inauguration of the extensive interactive itinerary

BEYOND THE SURFACE

THE EYE OF THE RESTORER

Vatican City – In 2023, the Vatican Museums’ Paintings and Wooden Materials Restoration Laboratory, one of the oldest structures in the world in its sector, celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Care and innovation – To celebrate this important milestone of experience, innovation and care for works of art, on Monday 11 December 2023, at 10.30, an exhibition will be presented in the Conference Hall of the Vatican Museums, allowing visitors and enthusiasts to explore the fascinating stories behind each work of art: a unique opportunity to appreciate at close quarters the details that often escape the visitor, but are revealed under the lens of restoration.

The eyes of the restorer – It will be possible to admire, through the eyes of the restorer, the execution and conservation techniques and the different decisions that characterize every restoration intervention.

Scan the QR Code – The content, published online, will be accessible along the museum itinerary by scanning a QR Code, positioned near the restored painting.

Team work – The Paintings Restoration Laboratory constitutes one of the historic centres in the conservation sector not only for Vatican City State, but at international level. The department’s activity involves the conservation of the heritage of the Holy See, made up of tens of thousands of square metres of mural decorations and around 5300 catalogued movable paintings, through monitoring, preventative controls, maintenance, prompt intervention, transfers, study, collaboration, and scientific research, which often coincide and culminate in the complex act of carrying out a complete restoration project.
