JUBILEE 2025: AT SANT’AGNESE IN AGONE ON 6 SEPTEMBER 2023: OPENING OF EXHIBITION OF THE'MASTERPIECES BY EL GRECO

Vatican City State (1 September 2023) – On Wednesday 6 September 2023, at 18.00, the exhibition “I Cieli aperti. El Greco a Roma” (“Open Heavens. El Greco in Rome”), featuring works by the Spanish painter El Greco (Candia, 1541 – Toledo, 1614) will be inaugurated in the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone, in the presence of Archbishop Rino Fisichella, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization. In the church in Piazza Navona, three masterpieces by the renowned Spanish Renaissance artist will be on display. As the works belong to private collections, they will leave Spain for the first time: The Holy Family with Saint Anne (Toledo, Hospital de Tavera), The Baptism of Christ (Toledo, Hospital de Tavera), and Christ Carrying the Cross (El Bonillo, Museo Paroquial). The exhibition can be visited every day from 9.00 to 21.00.

The initiative forms part of the “The Jubilee is culture” programme, rich in cultural events in preparation for the 2025 Jubilee. “Open Heavens. El Greco in Rome” is one of the first moments of great art opening the “pilgrimage” of beauty towards the Holy Year.
