Appointment of new Major of the Swiss Pontifical Guard

Pope Francis appointed Lieutenant Dominik Tännler Major of the Pontifical Swiss Guard on 7 March 2023.

Dominik Tännler was born on 7 February 1976 in the canton of Zurich and is originally from the municipality of Hasliberg (BE). He joined the Pontifical Swiss Guard on 2 February 1998. On 1 October 2000 he was promoted to Vice-Corporal, then successively: Corporal on 1 November 2004, Sergeant on 20 March 2014 and finally Lieutenant on 1 December 2020. As a Lieutenant, he was responsible for the management of the third team.

As Major, as head of security, he will assume responsibility for the deployment of services, operations, headquarters and operations planning.

We warmly congratulate Major Tännler on his appointment and wish him all the best and God's blessings for his service in the Guard.
