Resignation and appointment of archbishop of Chieti-Vasto, Italy

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto, Italy, presented by Archbishop Bruno Forte.

The Holy Father has appointed His Eminence Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, O.F.M. Conv., as metropolitan archbishop of Chieti-Vasto, Italy, transferring him from the offices of vicar general of His Holiness for Vatican City State, archpriest of the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, and president of the Fabric of Saint Peter.

Curriculum vitae

His Eminence Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, O.F.M. Conv., was born on 27 October 1965 in Castel San Pietro Terme, Bologna. After graduating in mechanical engineering from the University of Bologna, in 1992 he began his journey in the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. In 1995 he gave his temporary vows, and in 1998 his perpetual vows. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Theological Institute of Assisi, Perugia, he was awarded a licentiate in theological anthropology from the Theological Faculty of Central Italy in Florence.

He was ordained a priest on 8 January 2000 in Longiano, Forlì-Cesena.

He has held the following offices: animator of youth and vocational pastoral ministry for Emilia-Romagna (2000-2009) and head and animator of the religious community (guardian) (2005-2009) in the Convent of the Santissimo Crocifisso, provincial minister of the Bolognese Province of Saint Anthony of Padua (2009-2013), and general custos of the General Custody of the Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi (2013-2017); at the same time, the bishop of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino appointed him episcopal vicar for the pastoral care of the Papal Basilica of Saint Francis and other places of worship cared for by the Friars Minor Conventual in the same diocese.

In 2017 he was elected president of the Intermediterranean Federation of Provincial Ministers of the Friars Minor Conventual. He was then reconfirmed as custos general of the General Custody of the Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi for the four-year term 2017-2021, a role he held until 31 October 2020.

On 30 October 2020 he was assigned the titular see of Thisiduo, with the personal title of Archbishop, and he received episcopal consecration on 22 November 2020 at the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi.

The late Pope Francis created and proclaimed him Cardinal in the Consistory of 28 November 2020, of the deanery of Santissimo Nome di Maria al Foro Traiano, and on 20 February 2021 he appointed him vicar general of His Holiness for Vatican City State, archpriest of the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, and president of the Fabric of Saint Peter. In addition, on 2 June 2023 – with effect from 1 January 2024 – Pope Francis appointed him judge of the Court of Cassation of Vatican City State.

He is a member of the Dicastery for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life.
