Press Release from the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, 01.08.2026

“Christian–Confucian Dialogue for Building an Ideal Society”

4-5 August 2026

Sogang University, Seoul

The Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, in collaboration with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, Sogang University, and the Korean Confucian Academy, will organize the First Christian–Confucian Colloquium, to be held at Sogang University in Seoul from 4 to 5 August 2026.

Under the theme “New Heaven, New Earth and Datong (Great Harmony, Great Unity): Christian–Confucian Dialogue for Building an Ideal Society,” the Colloquium will bring together prominent Christian and Confucian religious leaders, scholars, and representatives to explore how these two traditions can jointly inspire a more just, peaceful, and humane world. Although Christianity and Confucianism rest on distinct theological and philosophical foundations, their shared concern for human dignity, moral integrity, responsible leadership, and the common good offers fertile ground for meaningful dialogue.

Discussions will address pressing contemporary challenges, including social fragmentation, moral uncertainty, environmental degradation, and threats to peace. The Colloquium is expected to conclude with a call for continued Christian–Confucian cooperation in education, ethical formation, and peacebuilding, marking the beginning of a lasting tradition of dialogue between followers of these two traditions.
