Resignation and appointment of bishop of Hamilton, Canada
The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Hamilton, Canada, presented by Bishop David Douglas Crosby, O.M.I.
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Józef A. Dąbrowski, C.S.M.A., transferring him from the diocese of Charlottetown.
Curriculum vitae
Bishop Józef A. Dąbrowski, C.S.M.A., was born on 17 July 1964 in Wysoka Strzyżowska, Poland, in the diocese of Rzeszów. After entering the Congregation of Saint Michael the Archangel (Michaelites), he studied philosphy and obtained a master’s degree in theology from the San Pietro Theological Institute of Viterbo.
He was ordained a priest on 4 May 1991 in Viterbo, Italy.
He has held the following offices: adjunct parish priest of Our Lady of Częstochowa, London, Ontario (1992-1993), adjunct parish priest of Saint Michael and chaplain of Cardinal Carter Catholic High School in Leamington (1993-1996), adjunct parish priest of Saint Pius X and chaplain of Saint Thomas High School in London (1996-1997), parish priest of Saint Mary and chaplain of the Catholic High School of London (since 1998), assistant spiritual director of Saint Peter’s Seminary, London (2002-2003), and member of the diocesan Presbyteral Council (2004-2006).
On 19 June 2013 he was appointed as first superior of the newly-established “Saint Kateri Tekakwitha” Michaelite vice-province for North America.
He was elected auxiliary bishop of London on 31 January 2015, and received episcopal consecration the following 14 April. On 2 April 2023 he was appointed bishop of Charlottetown.
Appointment of bishop of Poona, India
The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Simon Almeida, of the clergy of Poona, India, until now adjunct secretary of the Western Region Bishops’ Council, as bishop of the same diocese.
Curriculum vitae
Msgr. Simon Almeida was born on 4 November 1960 in Ghas in the present-day diocese of Vasai. After studying philosphy and theology at Saint Pius X College in Mumbai, he was awarded a degree in psychology and a Master of Arts in sociology from the University of Bombay, and a Master of Arts in pastoral studies from Manila University, Quezon City, Philippines.
He was ordained a priest on 1 April 1990 for the diocese of Poona.
He has held the following offices: deputy parish priest of Saint Patrick Cathedral in Poon (1990-1994), deputy parish priest of Saint Ignatius in Kirkee (1994-1996), diocesan director for youth (1996-2000), rector of the minor seminary (2002-2003), parish priest of Saint Patrick Cathedral in Poona (2003-2008), member of the Presbyteral Council (since 2003), parish priest of Saint Francis Xavier’s in Chinchwas (2008-2013), member of the College of Consultors (since 2009), bursar of the diocese of Poona (2010-2015), parish priest of Saint Anne’s in Solapur Bazaar (2013-2019), and parish priest of Saint John Paul II in Wakad (2019-2023).
To date, he has served as adjunct secretary of the Western Region Bishops’ Council.
