Credential Letters of the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Holy See, 27.05.2025

This morning, in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the Holy Father Leo XIV received in audience the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Holy See, His Excellency Mr. Hussein El Saharty, on the occasion of the presentation of his credential letters.

The following is a brief biography of the new Ambassador:

Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Holy See

His Excellency Mr. Hussein El Saharty was born on 18 July 1968, and is married with two children. His is of Muslim faith.

He attended the College of the Saint Jean Baptiste de la Salle Brothers. He holds a licentiate in political sciences (1989) and attended a course at the Institute for Diplomatic Studies at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cairo (1991).

He has held the following offices: Diplomatic Attaché, Department of Asia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1992 - 1993); Diplomatic Attaché, Office of the Representative to the League of Arab States (1993 - 1995); Third Secretary, Embassy in the Czech Republic (1995 - 1999); Second Secretary, Office of the Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Consular Affairs (1999 - 2000); Second Secretary, Embassy in Indonesia (2000 - 2004); First Secretary, Department for Multilateral Affairs (2004 - 2005); Consul, Consulate General in Jeddah Saudi Arabia (2005 - 2007); Representative to the Office of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (2007 - 2009); Counsellor, Department for Multilateral Affairs (2009 - 2011); Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy in Türkiye (2011 - 2013); Chargé d'Affaires, Embassy in Türkiye (2013 - 2015); Deputy Assistant to the Minister for Arab Affairs (2015 - 2021); Ambassador to Sri Lanka (non-resident in the Maldives) (2017 - 2021); and Deputy Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Non-Governmental Organizations (2021 - 2024).

He knows Arabic, French and English.
