Resignation and appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Poznań, Poland

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Poznań, Poland, presented by Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Zbigniew Zieliński as metropolitan archbishop of Poznań, Poland, transferring him from the see of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg.

Curriculum vitae

Archbishop-elect Zbigniew Zieliński was born on 14 January 1965 in Gdańsk. After carrying out his studies in philosophy and theology at the major seminary of Gdańsk, on 18 May 1991 he received priestly ordination for the same metropolitan archdiocese. He obtained a doctorate in sociology from Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University.

He has held the following offices: vicar of Blessed Virgin Mary of Sorrows in Gdańsk (1991-1999), vicar of the Most Holy Trinity Cathedral of Gdańsk-Oliwa (1999-2000), director of the Pastoral Department of the Curia (2000-2008), lecturer in sociology of religion at the University of Gdańsk (2004-2006), parish priest of Saint Michael the Archangel in Sopot (2004-2007), parish priest of the Most Holy Trinity Cathedral of Gdańsk-Oliwa (2007-2014), and parish priest of the Co-Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gdańsk (2014-2015).

On 26 September 2015 he was appointed titular bishop of Medeli and auxiliary of the metropolitan archdiocese of Gdańsk, receiving episcopal consecration the following 24 October.

On 10 March 2022 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of the diocese of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg, and on 2 February 2023 he became the diocesan bishop. From 24 February to 25 October 2025 he was apostolic administrator sede vacante of the metropolitan archdiocese of Szczecin-Kamień.
