Resignation and appointment of ordinary for Eastern faithful without a hierarchy of their own sui iuris Church in Poland

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the office of ordinary for Eastern faithful without a hierarchy of their own sui iuris Church in Poland, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz, metropolitan archbishop emeritus of Warszawa.

The Holy Father has appointed Archbishop Adrian Józef Galbas, S.A.C., metropolitan of Warszawa, Poland, as ordinary for Eastern faithful without a hierarchy of their own sui iuris Church in Poland.

Curriculum vitae

Archbishop Adrian Józef Galbas, S.A.C., was born on 26 January 1968 in Bytom, in the diocese of Gliwice. He entered the Society of the Catholic Apostolate (Pallottines), and carried out his studies in Ołtarzew at the major seminary of the same Society, for which he was ordained a priest on 7 May 1994.

After ordination, he first held the role of vicar of Saint Michael the Archangel in Łódź (1994-1995). He was awarded a licentiate in pastoral theology from the Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II (1995-1998), and went on to serve as prefect of Discipline in the major seminary of the Pallottines in Ołtarzew (1998-2002), provincial counsellor of the province of Poznań (2002-2005), parish priest of Saint Lawrence in Poznań (2003-2011), and provincial of the province of Poznań of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate (2011-2019). He was awarded a doctorate in spiritual theology from the Uniwersytet Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego di Warszawa (2012).

On 12 December 2019 he was elected to the titular see of Naisso and appointed auxiliary bishop of Ełk, receiving episcopal consecration the following 11 January.

On 4 December 2021 he was transferred to the Office of the Coadjutor Archbishop of the metropolitan archdiocese of Katowice, where he became metropolitan archbishop on 31 May 2023. From 2023 to 2024 he was apostolic administrator sede vacante of the diocese of Sosnowiec.

On 4 November 2024 he was appointed metropolitan archbishop of Warszawa.

 

Appointment of bishop of Timika, Indonesia

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Fr. Bernardus Bofitwos Baru, O.S.A., until now counsellor of the Augustinian vicariate of Papua-Indonesia and director of the Fajar Timur Superior School of Philosophy and Theology in Abepura, Jayapura.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Bernardus Bofitwos Baru, O.S.A., was born on 22 August 1969 in Suswa, Indonesia. He studied philosophy and theology at the STFT Fajar Timur in Jayapura and obtained a doctorate in missiology from the Pontifical Urbaniana University of Rome. He entered the novitiate of the Order of Saint Augustine, and was ordained a priest on 30 July 2006 for the diocese of Sorong, Indonesia.

He has held the following offices: master of novices in Sorong, Pahlawan, in the Community of Biara Tagasta (2006-2008), counsellor of the delegation of Papua-Indonesia (2006-2008), consultor of the diocese of Manokwari-Sorong, Indonesia (2006-2012), superior of the delegation of Papua-Indonesia (2008-2014), prior of the Community of Biara Tagaste in Sorong, Pahlawan (2010-2014, 2018-2023).

Since 2021, he has served as counsellor of the Augustinian vicariate of Papua-Indonesia and, since 2023, director of the Superior School of Philosophy and Theology of Fajar Timur in Abepura, Jayapura.

 

Appointment of bishop of Cuddapah, India

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Paul Prakash Saginala, of the clergy of Cuddapah, India, until now professor of sacred scripture at Saint John’s Regional Seminary in Hyderabad, as bishop of the same diocese.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Paul Prakash Saginala was born on 28 November 1960 in Badvel, diocese of Cuddapah. After studying philosophy and theology at the Sacred Heart Seminary, Poonamellee, Chennai, he was awarded a diploma in journalism from Delhi University.

He was ordained a priest on 27 April 1987 for the diocese of Cuddapah.

After ordination, he first served as deputy parish priest in Chittoor (1987-1988), correspondent at Saint Joseph’s Boarding and High School, Mariapuram, Cuddapah (1988-1991) and parish priest in Tekurpet (1991-1994). He was awarded a doctorate in biblical theology from the Pontifical Urbaniana University of Rome (1994-1998) and went on to hold the offices of vice-rector of the Collegio San Paolo in Rome (1998-2004), parish priest and dean in Proddatur (2004-2008), professor of sacred scripture at Saint John’s Regional Seminary, Hyderabad (2008-2015), chancellor and parish priest in Masapet, Cuddapah (2015-2022), and professor of sacred scripture at Saint John’s Regional Seminary, Hyderabad (since 2022).

 

Appointment of bishop of Bafatá, Guinea Bissau

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Fr. Victor Luís Quematcha, O.F.M., until now definitor general of the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor for Africa, as bishop of the diocese of Bafatá, Guinea Bissau.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Victor Luís Quematcha, O.F.M., was born on 27 April 1967 in Cúmura, Bissau, in Guinea Bissau. He studied philosophy and human sciences at the Institut Supérieur Don Bosco in Lomé, Togo, and theology at the major seminary of Anyama in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

After giving his religious vows in 1997 in Brá, he was ordained a priest on 2 May 1998 in Nhoma, Guinea Bissau.

After ordination, he first served as deputy master of novices in Dapaong, Togo (1997-2000), and rector of the minor seminary of Brá, Guinea Bissau (2000-2004). He was awarded a licentiate in moral theology from the Pontifical Alphonsian Academy in Rome (2004-2006), and went on to hold the roles of professor of moral theology in the Dom Settimo Arturo Ferrazetta Interdiocesan Major Seminary in Bissau (2006-2021), master of temporary professed in Brá, Guinea Bissau (2007-2009), custodian of the Custody of Saint Francis of Assisi for Guinea Bissau (2009-2018), parish priest of the Nossa Senhora da Candelária de Bissau Cathedral (2014-2020), director of the Mal-de-Hansen Hospital in Cúmura, Guinea Bissau (2017-2021), and definitor general of the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor for Africa (since 2021).
