Appointment of bishop of Achonry, Ireland
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Kevin Doran of Elphin, apostolic administrator of Achonry, as bishop of the diocese of Achonry, Ireland, uniting in persona Episcopi the dioceses of Achonry and Elphin.
Curriculum vitae
Bishop Kevin Doran was born in Dublin on 26 June 1953. He obtained a Master of Arts in philosophy at the National University of Ireland, and studied at the Mater Dei College in Dublin and at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome.
He was ordained a priest on 6 July 1977 for the metropolitan archdiocese of Dublin.
After ordination, he held the role of teacher at Ringsend Professional School, Dublin (1977-1983) and served in the diocesan Secretariat for Education (1980-1983) and as university chaplain (1983). He was awarded a doctorate in philosophy from the Angelicum and went on to hold the offices of spiritual director of the Irish College (1990), parish vicar in Foxrock (1995-1998), diocesan and then national director for vocations (1998-2006), parish priest of Glendalough (2005-2009), secretary general of the Preparatory Committee for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress (2008-2012), director for Formation of Permanent Deacons (2007-2014), secretary of the Commission of the Episcopal Conference for Bioethics (1996-2014), member of the Management Committee of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Dublin and consultor at the Congregation for Catholic Education, and administrator of the Sacred Heart parish in Dublin (2013-2014).
He was appointed bishop of Elphin on 14 May 2014, and received episcopal consecration the following 13 July. On 10 April 2024, he was appointed apostolic administrator of Achonry.
