Resignation and appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Léon, Mexico
The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Léon, Mexico, presented by Archbishop Alfonso Cortés Contreras.
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Jaime Calderón Calderón, hitherto of Tapachula, as metropolitan archbishop of Léon, Mexico.
Curriculum vitae
Archbishop-elect Calderón Calderón was born on 1 May in Churintzio, diocese of Zamora. He was ordained a priest on 16 February 1991, and incardinated in the diocese of Zamora.
He was awarded a licentiate in philosophy from the Universidad Pontificia de Mexico, and a doctorate in philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome. He has served as parish vicar, prefect, vice-rector and rector of the major seminary of Zamora, coordinator of the Presbyteral Council, secretary of the College of Consultors, judge in the ecclesiastical tribunal, and president of the Organization of Mexican Seminaries.
On 5 July 2012 he was appointed titular bishop of Iomnium and auxiliary of Zamora, and was consecrated the following 5 October. On 9 July 2018 he was appointed bishop of Tapachula.
He is a member of the Permanent Board of the Episcopal Conference of Mexico, and also of the General Secretariat of the Synod.
