Appointment of bishop of Osnabrück, Germany

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Dominicus Meier, O.S.B., as bishop of Osnabrück, Germany, transferring him from the titular see of Castro di Sardegna and the office of auxiliary of the archdiocese of Paderborn.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Dominicus Meier, O.S.B., was born on 10 July 1959 in Heggen, in the archdiocese of Paderborn. After a brief work experience, he entered the Königsmünster Abbey in Meschede, belonging to the Benedictine Congregation of Saint Ottilien. He attended the University of Würzburg and the University of Münster, receiving a diploma in theology.

He was ordained a priest on 14 January 1989.

He was awarded a doctorate in theology from the Faculty of Theology of the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (1991), and went on to serve as judge in the diocesan tribunal of Salzburg (1989-1991), Defender of the Bond (1992-1994), and Promoter of Justice in the tribunal of the archdiocese of Paderborn (1994-2001). After obtaining a licentiate (1997) and professional practice qualification in canon law from the Faculty of Theology of the University of Münster (1991), he held the offices of full professor of canon law at the Philosophical-Theological College of the Pallottines in Vallendar, abbot of Königsmünster in Meschede (2001-2013), and judicial vicar of the archdiocese of Paderborn (2013-2022). On 15 July 2015 he was elected titular bishop of Castro di Sardegna and auxiliary of Paderborn, receiving episcopal consecration the following 27 September. Within the Episcopal Conference he is deputy chair of the Commission for Migrations.
