Appointment of bishop of Burlington, U.S.A.
The Holy Father has appointed Msgr. John J. McDermott, of the clergy of the diocese of Burlington, United States of America, until now diocesan administrator, as bishop of the same see.
Curriculum vitae
Msgr. John J. McDermott was born on 19 March 1963 in the State of New Jersey. He attended Belmont Abbey College, and then Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He subsequently obtained a licentiate in canon law from the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington.
He was ordained a priest on 3. June 1989 for the diocese of Burlington.
He has held the following offices: parish vicar of Saint Augustine in Montpelier (1989-1992) and of Saint Mark in Burlington, Vermont (1992-1996), parish priest of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Middlebury, Vermont (1996-2001), chaplain of the University of Vermont in Burlington (2001-2015), administrator of Christ the King-Saint Anthony in Burlington (since 2015), vice chancellor (2004-2005), chancellor (2005-2006), vicar general and moderator of the Curia (since 2006), apostolic administrator sede vacante (2014) and diocesan administrator (since 2023).
