Appointment of bishop of Kurnool, India
The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Fr. Johannes Gorantia, O.C.D., until now rector of the Seminarium Missionum of the Pontifical Theological Faculty and Pontifical Institute of Spirituality “Teresianum” in Rome, as bishop of the diocese of Kurnool, India.
Curriculum vitae
Bishop Johannes Gorantia, O.C.D., was born on 27 February 1974 in Nawabu Peta, in the diocese of Vijayawada. He gave his first vows in the Order of Descalced Carmelites in 1994, and his perpetual vows in 2000. He studied philosophy at the Sacred Heart Philosophical College in Kerala, and theology at the Teresianum in Rome. He was awarded a licentiate in sacred scripture from the Biblicum and a doctorate in biblical theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
He was ordained a priest on 10 January 2002.
After ordination, he first held the role of deputy parish priest in Kallaru, diocese of Khammam (2002). Following his studies in Rome from 2002 to 2008, he went on to serve as provincial of Andhra Pradesh, secretary of the O.C.D. Inter Provincial Council of India, consultor of the diocese of Khammam, member of the Episcopal Council of Andhra Pradesh for the Biblical Commissions and Proclamation, visiting professor of sacred scripture at the Jyothirbhavan in Kalamassery, Kerala, and at the Saint Joseph Seminary in the diocese of Khammam (2008-2014), president of the Conference of Religious of Andhra Pradesh and vice chairman of the Commission for Catholic Education (2010-2014), parish priest of the Saint Pius X Monastery, superior of the Community of Nacharam of the archdiocese of Hyderabad and vice president of the Regional Commission for Education (2014-2015), definitor general of the Descalced Carmelites (2015-2021), and since 2021, rector of the Seminarium Missionum of the Teresianum in Rome.
