Appointment of bishop of Petrópolis, Brazil
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Joel Portella Amado as bishop of the diocese of Petrópolis, Brazil, transferring him from the titular see of Carmeiano and the office of auxiliary of the archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro.
Curriculum vitae
Bishop Joel Portella Amado was born on 2 October 1954 in Rio de Janeiro, in the archdiocese of the same name. He carried out his studies in philosophy at the Instituto Aloisiano de Companhia de Jesus, and in theology at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, where he was awarded a doctorate in pastoral theology. In addition, he attended a course in jurisprudence.
He was ordained a priest on 12 October 1982, and incardinated in the archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro.
He has held the following offices: parish priest of Jesus Ressuscitado, Nossa Senhora da Vitória and the Cathedral of São Sebastião, vicar forane, member of the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultors; archdiocesan pastoral coordinator; vicar general; professor at the Higher Institute of Theology of the archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro and of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, member of the National Pastoral Institute of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil and of the team for theological-pastoral reflection of CELAM.
He was delegate assessor of the Fifth General Conference of the Latin American Episcopate in Aparecida (2007) and executive secretary of the World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro (2013).
On 7 December 2016 he was appointed titular bishop of Carmeiano and auxiliary of Rio de Janeiro, receiving episcopal ordination on 28 January 2017.
From 2019 to 2023 he was secretary general of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil, and is currently chair of the Episcopal Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith of the same Episcopal Conference.

Today, Wednesday 31 January 2024, the episcopal ordination of the Reverend Pietro Wu Yishan took place. The Reverend Wu Yishan was appointed by the Holy Father on 16 December 2023 as bishop of the apostolic prefecture of Shaowu, Minbei, in the Chinese province of Fujian, within the framework of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China.

The Reverend Pietro Wu Yishan was born on 7 December 1964. He was ordained a priest on 15 August 1992 for the diocese of Xiamen. He was subsequently sent to Minbei where he carried out his pastoral service, holding the roles, among others, of parish priest of Nanping and responsible for the apostolic prefectures of Shaowi and Jian’ou.

Appointment of under-secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education
The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Msgr. Matthias Ambros, until now substitute Promotor of Justice of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, as under-secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education.
Curriculum vitae
Msgr. Ambros was born on 24 July 1979 in Freyung, Germany, and on 10 October 2009 he received priestly ordination for the diocese of Passau. He was awarded a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome. In 2016 he began his service in the Roman Curia, first in the then-Congregation for Catholic Education and then at the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, where he was appointed substitute Promotor of Justice in December 2022. He is also a member of the Special Commission for the negotiation of causes of marriage dissolution in favorem Fidei of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and lecturer in the Faculty of canon law in the Pontifical Gregorian University.
