Credential Letters of the Ambassador of Brazil to the Holy See, 06.11.2023

This morning, in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the Holy Father Francis received in audience His Excellency Mr. Everton Vieira Vargas, ambassador of Brazil to the Holy See, on the occasion of the presentation of his credential letters.

The following is a brief biography of the new ambassador:

Ambassador of Brazil to the Holy See

His Excellency Mr. Everton Vieira Vargas was born in Santo Ângelo, Rio Grande do Sul, on 23 January 1955. He is married with two children.

He completed preparation (1976) and advanced (1981) courses for diplomats at the Rio Branco Institute (IRBR), a course in law, Federal District Unified Teaching Association (UNIDF) (1977), a master’s degree in international relations, Boston University, United States of America (1983), a higher training course (IRBR) (1994), and doctorate in sociology from the University of Brasilia (2001).

He has held the following positions, among others: assistant, Organization of American States Division, MFA (1977); second secretary, Embassy in Bonn, Germany (1981); assistant (1985) and deputy chief (1987), Science and Technology Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; first secretary and counsellor, Representation to the United Nations, New York (1988); counsellor, Embassy in Japan (1992); secretary general, general coordinator of the Summit of the Americas, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1995); chief, Environment Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1998); director general, Environment and Special Topics Department (2001); professor of diplomatic language, Rio Branco Institute (2002 - 2007); special assistant (2005), chief of Cabinet (2006) to the secretary general of Foreign Affairs (Relations with the United States of America, Canada, Europe and Multilateral Themes); under-secretary general, Political Under-Secretariat I (2007); climate change negotiator (2001 - 2005 and 2007); ambassador to Berlin, Germany (2009); ambassador to Argentina (2013); ambassador to the European Union, Brussels (2016); and coordinator of International Relations, State of Pará (2019 - 2023).
