Appointment of coadjutor archbishop of Mérida-Badajoz, Spain

The Holy Father has appointed Archbishop José Rodríguez Carballo, O.F.M., as coadjutor archbishop of Mérida-Badajoz, Spain, transferring him from the titular see of Belcastro and the office of secretary of the Dicastery for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life. Archbishop Carballo will continue to perform his duties at the aforementioned Diastery until 31 October 2023.

Curriculum vitae

Archbishop José Rodríguez Carballo, O.F.M., was born on 11 August 1953 in Lodoselo, diocese of Orense, Spain. He gave his temporary vows on 9 August 1971 and his solemn profession in the Order of Friars Minor on 8 December 1976.

He was ordained a priest on 28 June 1977 in Jerusalem in the Church of Saint Saviour.

He holds a degree in biblical theology and oriental sciences from the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum in Jerusalem, and a degree in sacred scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome.

He has held the following positions: master of novices in the religious province of Santiago de Compostela (1982-1989); provincial definitor and provincial secretary for Formation and Studies; commissary of the Holy Land; guardian and rector of the Convent of Saint Francis in Santiago de Compostela and master of the friars in temporary profession; teacher of sacred scripture at the diocesan seminary of Vigo and Santiago de Compostela; provincial minister of Santiago de Compostela; president of the Union of Franciscan Provincial Ministers of Europe (1993-1997); definitor general of the Order, secretary general for Formation and Studies and delegate of the Grand Chancellor for the Pontifical University Antonianum in Rome; minister general of the Order of Friars Minor, as 119th successor of Saint Francis of Assisi; president of the Union of Superiors General; member of the Congregations for the Evangelization of Peoples and for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life; member of the Executive Council of the Union of Superiors General (2003-2012) and president of the Theological Commission (2009-2012); and president of the Union of Superiors General.

He was appointed titular archbishop of Belcastro and secretary of the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life on 6 April 2013, and received episcopal consecration on the following 18 May at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

He is a Doctor Honoris Causa for the University of the Americas, for the University of San Buenaventura in Colombia and for the same University in the United States of America. He is also a member of the International Academy of Portuguese Culture.

 

Appointment of president of the Pontifical Committee of Social Sciences

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Father Marek Andrzej Inglot, S.J., full professor in the Faculty of History and Cultural Heritage of the Church of the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, as president of the Pontifical Committee of Social Sciences.

Curriculum vitae

The Reverend Father Marek Andrzej Inglot, S.J., was born on 25 March 1961 in Brzozów, Poland. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1980, was ordained a priest on 29 June 1988 and gave his perpetual vows on 22 August 1997. He was awarded a doctorate in Church history from the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome in 1995. Since 1993 he has taught in the Faculty of History and Cultural Heritage of the Church of the aforementioned university, of which he has also served as dean. He is a member of the Pontifical Committee of Social Sciences since 17 March 2020.

 

Appointment of under-secretary of the Section for Diplomatic Staff of the Holy See, of the Secretariat of State

The Holy Father has appointed Msgr. Joseph Murphy, until now head of Protocol of the Secretariat of State, as under-secretary of the Section for Diplomatic Staff of the Holy See, of the Secretariat of State.

 

Appointment of under-secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Father Antonino Spadaro, S.J., until now editor of the journal La Civiltà Cattolica, as under-secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education. He will assume office on 1 January 2024.

Curriculum vitae

The Reverend Fatherr Antonino Spadaro, S.J., was born on 6 July 1966 in Messina, Italy. After graduating in philosophy from the University of Messina in 1988, he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus. On 21 December 1996 he received priestly ordination and gave his solemn vows in the Society on 24 May 2007. In 2000, he was awarded a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Inducted into the College of Writers of the journal La Civiltà Cattolica in 1998, he became its director on 6 September 2011. He is a consultor of the Dicastery for Culture and Education and an ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Fine Arts and Letters of the Virtuosi al Pantheon.

 

Appointment of head of Protocol of the Secretariat of State

The Holy Father has appointed Msgr. Javier Domingo Fernández González, until now official in the Section for Relations with States and International Organizations of the Secretariat of State, as head of Protocol of the Secretariat of State.
