Resignation and appointment of Patriarch of Lisboa, Portugal
The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Patriarchate of Lisboa, Portugal, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Manuel José Macário do Nascimento Clemente.
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Rui Manuel Sousa Valério, S.M.M., until now bishop military ordinary of Portugal, as Patriarch of Lisboa, Portugal.
Curriculum vitae
Bishop Rui Manuel Sousa Valério, S.M.M., was born on 24 December in Ourém, diocese of Leiria-Fátima. After completing his studies in philosophy at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, and in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he received a licentiate in dogmatic theology. He subsequently attended a course in philology at La Sapienza University of Rome and in spirituality at the Centre International Montfortain in Louvain, Belgium.
He gave his religious vows in the Company of Mary (Montfort Missionaries) on 6 October 1990, and was ordained a priest on 23 March 1991.
He has held the following offices: collaborator in the parish of Castelverde di Lunghezza in Rome; parish vicar in Castro Verde, diocese of Beja; vicar forane, parish vicar and then parish priest in Póvoa de Santo Adrião, in the Patriarchate of Lisboa; and military chaplain in the Marine Hospital in Lisboa and at the Naval School in Alfaiete.
Within his religious institute in Portugal, he has served as formator of postulants, counsellor to the Major Superior for the Delegation, and local Superior.
On 27 October 2018 he was appointed military ordinary of Portugal, and received episcopal ordination the following 25 November.
