Appointment of bishop of Perpignan-Elne, France
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Thierry Scherrer of Laval as bishop of Perpignan-Elne, France.
Curriculum vitae
Bishop Thierry Scherrer was born on 22 January 1959 in Versailles. After attending the Faculty of Medicine in Marseille, he studied at the seminaries of Paray-le-Monial and Saint-Luc in Aix-en-Provence, obtaining a licentiate in theology from the Institut d’Études Théologiques in Brussels and a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
He was ordained a priest on 26 June 1988 for the archdiocese of Aix.
He has held the following offices: chaplain of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome (1989-1991); deputy parish priest of the Cathedral of Saint-Sauveur in Aix and professor at the Saint-Luc diocesan seminary (1991-1996); delegate of the diocesan service for Health Pastoral Care (1999-2004); collaborator in the parishes of Bouc-Bel-Air and Cabriès-Calas (2002-2004); parish priest in Puyricard and dean of Aix-Sainte-Victoire (2004-2007); administrator of the parishes of Peyrolles, Jouques, Meyrargues, Le-Puy-Sainte-Réparade, Saint-Canadet and Saint-Paul-les-Durances, of the pastoral unit of Aix Val de Durance (2006-2007); parish priest of the Cathedral of Saint-Sauveur in Aix-en-Provence and dean of Aix-Sainte-Victoire.
On 21 May 2008 he was appointed bishop of Laval and received episcopal ordination on 6 July 2008. Within the Episcopal Conference, he is a member of the council for Liturgy and Sacramental Pastoral Ministry.
