Resignation and appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Braga, Portugal

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Braga, Portugal, presented by Archbishop Jorge Ferreira da Costa Ortiga.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop José Manuel Garcia Cordeiro as metropolitan archbishop of the metropolitan archdiocese of Braga, Portugal, transferring him from the diocese of Bragança-Miranda.

Curriculum vitae

Archbishop-elect José Manuel Garcia Cordeiro was born on 29 May 1967 in Vila Nova de Seles, Angola. He came to Portugal in 1975 and attended the minor and major seminary of the diocese of Bragança-Miranda and carried out his studies in philosophy and theology at the Universidad Católica Portuguesa in Porto. He was awarded a licentiate (2001) and a doctorate (2004) in liturgy from the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm in Rome.

He was ordained a priest on 6 June 1991 for the diocese of Bragança-Miranda. He has held the following offices: parish priest, formator in the diocesan seminary and chaplain of the Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (1991-1999); vice rector of the Pontifical Portuguese College (2001-2005); professor in the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm (2004-2011); consultor of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments (2010-2011); and rector of the Pontifical Portuguese College in Rome (2005-2011).

On 18 July he was appointed as bishop of Bragança-Miranda. Within the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, he is a member of the Permanent Council.

 

Appointment of bishop of Terrassa, Spain

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of Terrassa, Spain, Bishop Salvador Cristau Coll, until now titular of Aliezira and auxiliary of the same see.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Salvador Cristau Coll was born on 15 April 1950 in Barcelona. He graduated in civil law from the Universitat de Barcelona. He carried out his ecclesial studies in Toledo and was awarded a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Facultad de Teología del Norte de España, Burgos.

He was ordained a priest in Toledo on 12 October 1980. On 15 January 1985 he was incardinated in Barcelona, and in 2004, in the diocese of Terrassa.

In Toledo he was coadjutor in several parishes, parish administrator, notary of the ecclesiastical tribunal, and seminary formator. In Barcelona he served as an official of the diocesan Curia, vice rector and spiritual director of the major seminary, parish priest, promoter of justice, archpriest of the Cathedral and secretary-chancellor of the Curia. Finally, in Terrassa he was parish priest of the Cathedral, vicar general and rector of the seminary.

He was elected auxiliary of Terrassa and titular bishop of Aliezira on 18 May 2010, and was consecrated on 26 June 2010. Within the Spanish Episcopal Conference, he has served as a member of the Episcopal Commission for Seminaries and Universities (2010-2020) and for Cultural Heritage (2011-2014). Since 2020 he has been a member of the Episcopal Commission for Clergy and Seminaries.
