Appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Catanzaro-Squillace, Italy

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Claudio Maniago as metropolitan archbishop of Catanzaro-Squillace, Italy, transferring him from the diocese of Castellaneta.

Curriculum vitae

Archbishop-elect Claudio Maniago was born on 8 February 1959 in Florence, in the province and archdiocese of the same name. After completing his studies at the classical lyceum, he entered the major seminary, attending the Studio Teologico Fiorentino. A student at the Almo Collegio Capranica, he obtained a licentiate in liturgy from the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm.

He was ordained a priest on 19 April 1984.

From 1987 to 1994 he was rector of the diocesan minor seminary, director of the diocesan vocations centre, member of the diocesan pastoral council and ecclesiastical assistant of the Serra Club.

In 1988 he became master of ceremonies to the metropolitan archbishop of Florence, and began teaching liturgy at the Theological Faculty of Central Italy; in 1991 he was appointed director of the diocesan liturgical office and member of the Ordinandi Commission.

Since 1994 he has served as pro-vicar general of the metropolitan archdiocese, moderator of the archiepiscopal Curia, and honorary canon of the Cathedral Church of Florence. In 2001 he was appointed vicar general.

On 18 July 2003 he was appointed titular bishop of Satafi and auxiliary of Florence, and consecrated the following 8 September. In 2008 he was confirmed as vicar general.

On 12 July 2014 he was appointed bishop of Castellaneta.

From 2015 to 2021 he was president of the Episcopal Commission for the Liturgy (CEL) and of the Centre for Liturgical Action (CAL). Since 2016 he has been a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
