Appointment of auxiliary bishop of the metropolitan archdiocese of Sydney, Australia
The Holy Father has appointed as auxiliary bishop of the metropolitan archdiocese of Sydney, Australia, the Reverend Daniel Joseph Meagher, until now administrator of All Hallows parish in Five Dock, Sydney, assigning him the titular see of Pocofelto.
Curriculum vitae
Msgr. Daniel Joseph Meagher was born on 10 November 1961 in Sydney. After studying at Saint Ignatius College in Riverview, he was awarded a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1984 and in civil law in 1986 from the University of Sydney.
He worked as a lawyer for some years before entering the Seminary of the Good Shepherd in the metropolitan archdiocese of Sydney. He obtained a degree in theology in 1994 from Saint Patrick’s College, and a licentiate in fundamental theology in 2006 from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
He was ordained a priest on 22 July 1995 in the Cathedral of Sydney.
After ordination, from 1995 to 1998, he served as deputy parish priest of Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish, Mount Pritchard; and from 1998 to 2000 of the Sacred Heart parish in Mosman and as diocesan director of vocations. In 2001, he became the first parish priest of Holy Spirit in Carnes Hill. He was a member of the Presbyteral Council and the board of the diocesan Catholic Weekly. From 2006 to 2008 he was one of the leaders of the World Youth Day leadership team. In 2006 he was appointed chaplain of the Board of Catholic Care and in 2007 chairman of the Charitable Works Fund Appeals Tribunal. From 2007 to 2012 he was parish priest of Saint Columba’s in Leichhardt North, and from 2008 to 2012, director of the Formation of the Permanent Diaconate programme. In the diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes, from 2012 to 2013, he was administrator of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Broken Hill. He was also a diocesan consultor and member of the Trustees of the archdiocese.
From 2014 to 2020 he was rector of the Seminary of the Good Shepherd in Sydney. Since January 2021 he has been carrying out an apostolate for the homeless in Surry Hills, and from June 2021 until the present he has served as administrator of All Hallows parish in Five Dock, Sydney.
