Resignation and appointment of the metropolitan archbishop of Tuam, Ireland
The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Tuam, Ireland, presented by Archbishop Michael Neary.
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Francis Duffy of Ardagh and Clonmacnois as metropolitan archbishop of Tuam, Ireland.
Curriculum vitae
Archbishop-elect Francis Duffy was born on 21 April 1958 in Bawnboy, County Cavan, diocese of Kilmore. After studying at Saint Patrick’s College in Cavan, he entered Maynooth Seminary where he attended courses in philosophy and theology. He was subsequently awarded two Master’s degrees, in history, from the National University of Ireland, and in education and management, from Trinity College, Dublin.
He was ordained a priest on 20 June 1982, for the diocese of Kilmore.
Since priestly ordination he has served as a teacher of history and Irish language at Saint Patrick’s College, Cavan, subsequently teaching in the diocesan school of Saint Felim in Ballinamore and later becoming head teacher.
From 2008 to 2012 he was diocesan secretary and chancellor.
While serving in the parish of Laragh and in Saint Michael’s Church, Clifferna, he was awarded a doctorate in education. On 17 July 2013 he was elected bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois, receiving episcopal ordination the following 6 October.
Within the Irish Episcopal Conference he chairs the Commission for the Liturgy.
