Appointment of bishop of Valparaíso, Chile

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Jorge Patricio Vega Velasco, S.V.D., bishop prelate of Illapel, Chile, as bishop of Valparaíso, Chile.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Jorge Patricio Vega Velasco, S.V.D., was born on 12 June 1957 in Santiago, Chile. He carried out his ecclesiastical studies in philosophy in the Seminario Pontificio Mayor de Santiago de Chile and in theology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina in Buenos Aires.

On 1 March 1983 he gave his religious vows as a member of the Society of the Divine Word and was ordained a priest on 22 December 1984.

For thirteen years he served as a missionary in Angola. From 1997 to 2003 he was secretary for missions for his Institute and, from 2003 to 2010, national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Chile and editor of the journal Chile Misionero.

On 20 February 2010 he was appointed as bishop prelate of Illapel. He received episcopal consecration on 17 April 2010.

 

Appointment of bishop of Rancagua, Chile

The Holy Fathe has appointed Bishop Guillermo Patricio Vero Soto as bishop of Rancagua, Chile, transferring him from the diocese of Iquique.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Guillermo Patricio Vera Soto was born on 7 June 1958 in Isla de Maipo, diocese of Melipilla. He carried out his studies in philosophy and theology in the Seminario Pontificio Mayor de Santiago de Chile.

He was ordained a priest on 12 June 1982 for the metropolitan archdiocese of Santiago de Chile, and was incardinated in the diocese of Melipilla when it was erected in 1991.

He held the office of parish priest in Talagante, Curacaví and in the cathedral of Melipilla.

On 10 April 2003 he was appointed as bishop prelate of Calama and received consecration the following 31 May. On 20 February 2010 the prelature was elevated to a diocese with the name of San Juan Bautista de Calama and Msgr. Guillermo Patricio Vera Soto was appointed as its first bishop.

On 22 February 2014 he was appointed as bishop of Iquique.
