Appointment of ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences

The Holy Father has appointed Professor Stefano Piccolo, professor of molecular biology at the University of Padua, Italy, as ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

Currculum vitae

Professor Stefano Piccolo was born in Padua on 19 May 1967. He graduated in biological sciences (1991) and was awarded a research doctorate (1995) from the University of Padua. After a period of post-doctoral research at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Los Angeles, United States of America, in 1998 he returned to the University of Padua as a researcher, where since 2003 he has held the chair in molecular biology.

He is also principal investigator of the FIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology (IFOM). He has received several awards, including the Swiss Bridge Award (2005); the Chiara D'Onofrio Award (2007); the Debiopharm Group Life Sciences Award (2011); the Professor Luigi Tartufari Award and the Guido Venosta Award (2012). He joined the Accademia dei Lincei in 2014. He has published numerous scientific studies, with particular attention to molecular behaviour in the mechanisms of tumours and ageing.
