Erection of the territorial prelature of Sicuani, Peru, and appointment of first bishop
The Holy Father has erected in diocese the territorial prelature of Sicuani. Peru, and has appointed Bishop Pedro Alberto Bustamante López, until now bishop prelate, as first bishop.
Curriculum vitae
Bishop Bustamante López was born on 9 January 1965 in Cotaparaco, Recuay, in the diocese of Huaraz (ecclesiastical province of Trujillo, in northern Peru). He attended the San Jerónimo archdiocesan seminary in Arequipa (1986-1992) and was ordained a priest for the same archdiocese on 7 December 1992. After working for three years as parish priest in the parish of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, he attended the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he was awarded a licentiate in dogmatic theology.
After returning to the diocese, he served as parish priest in two other parishes: Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (1998-1999) and Santa Gertrudis (1999-2005). From 2005 to 2013 he was parish priest of the parish of San Agustín - El Sagrario. While carrying out his parish ministry, he also served as pro-vicar general from 1999 to 2006, episcopal vicar from 2007 to 2010 and, from 2011 to 2013, vicar general of the archdiocese of Arequipa.
He was elected bishop prelate of Sicuani on 10 July 2013 and received episcopal ordination the following 15 August.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Roberto Bergamaschi, S.D.B., titular of Ambia, and until now vicar apostolic of Awasa, as vicar apostolic of Gambella, Ethiopia.
Appointment of ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences
The Holy Father has appointed Professor Fabiola Gianotti, director general of the Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire (CERN) in Geneva (Switzerland), as ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
Curriculum vitae
Professor Fabiola Gianotti was born in Rome on 29 October 1960. She obtained her PhD in experimental particle physics at the University of Milan in 1989. Since 1994 she has been a researcher at the Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire (CERN). In July 2012, during the seminar that formalised the discovery of the Higgs boson, she presented the results of the research. Since 2016 she has held the position of director general of CERN, thus becoming the first woman to take on this role. She has been a member of several international scientific committees and of the Advisory Committee of the Secretary General of the United Nations. She has received several honorary doctorates and international awards. She is a corresponding member of many Academies and author or co-author of a significant number of scientific publications.
