Appointment of auxiliary bishop of the archieparchy of Kottayam of the Syro-Malabars, India
The Holy Father has appointed as auxiliary bishop of the archieparchy of Kottayam of the Syro-Malabars, India, the Reverend Gheevarghese (George) Kurisummoottil, currently syncellus for Syro-Malankars. The bishop-elect has taken the name Gheevarghese Mar Aprem.
Curriculum vitae
Bishop Gheevarghese Mar Aprem Kurisummottil was born on 9 August 1961 in Tiruvalla, and, after his primary school studies, entered St. Stanislaw’s minor seminary in Kottayam.
He carried out his philosophical and theological studies in St. Joseph’s inter diocesan seminary in Mangalore.
After priestly ordination on 27 December 1987 he served as vice-rector of the minor seminary for three years.
He served for ten years in various parishes, before obtaining the grade of Master in Sacred Art at the Holy Spirit Maronite University in Kaslik, Lebanon, where he resided from 2001 to 2004.
Following his higher studies, he taught iconography at Saint Ephrem Ecumenical Research Institute and theology of icons at the Saint Thomas Apostolic Seminary.
He has served as director of the “Hadusa” Commission for the Performing Arts of the archieparchy of Kottayam from 2009 to 2013, at the same time exercising his parish ministry.
Since 2014 he has served as parish priest of Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church, Ranni.
In 2019 he was appointed as syncellus for the Syro-Malankar faithful entrusted to the archieparchy of Kottayam of the Syro-Malabars.
Appointment of apostolic nuncio in Brazil
The Holy Father has appointed Archbishop Giambattista Diquattro, until now apostolic nuncio in India and in Nepal, as apostolic nuncio in Brazil.
