Resignation of metropolitan archbishop of Bogotá, Colombia, and appointment of new metropolitan archbishop

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Bogotá, Colombia, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Rubén Salazar Gómez.

The Pope has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of Bogotá, Colombia, Archbishop Luis José Rueda Aparicio of Popayán, Colombia.

Archbishop Luis José Rueda Aparicio

Archbishop Luis José Rueda Aparicio was born in San Gil, Santander, diocese of Socorro y San Gil, on 3 March 1962. He carried out his studies in philosophy in the major seminary of Socorro y San Gil and in theology in the major seminary of Bucaramanga.

He was ordained a priest on 23 November 1989. He obtained a licentiate in moral theology at the Alphonsianum Academy of Rome. He served as parish priest in various parishes, professor of the major seminary, deputy director of the diocesan secretariat for the pastoral care of charity, rector of the diocesan institute for rural development, and diocesan vicar for pastoral ministry.

On 2 February 2012 he was appointed as bishop of Montelíbano and received episcopal ordination the following 14 April. On 19 May he was appointed as metropolitan archbishop of Popayán.

 

Resignation of metropolitan archbishop of Mbarara, Uganda, and appointment of new metropolitan archbishop

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Mbarara, Uganda, presented by Archbishop Paul K. Bakyenga.

The Pope has appointed as archbishop of Mbarara, Uganda, Bishop Lambert Bainomugisha, auxiliary of the same see.

Archbishop-elect Lambert Bainomugisha

Archbishop-elect Lambert Bainomugisha was born on 12 July 1961 in Kashumba, in the then-diocese of Mbarara. He studied in his home country and in Canada, obtaining a degree in canon law from the Saint Paul University of Ottawa. He was ordained a priest on 13 July 1991.

For several years he carried out his pastoral ministry in the parish of Saint Joseph the Worker in Rubindi, Mbarara, before going to Canada in 1994 to complete his studies. Upon his return, he served from 2000 to 2005 as chancellor of the archdiocese.

On 2 July 2005, he was appointed as auxiliary of the archdiocese of Mbarara and elected to the titular see of Tacia montana. He received episcopal consecration the following 1 October. On 13 November 2009 he was appointed as apostolic administrator “sede plena et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis” of the diocese of Hoima, which became sede vacante on 8 February 2014; he held this office until 29 February 2016.

Within the Episcopal Conference of Uganda, Archbishop-elect Bainomugisha is president of the Commission for legal affairs, and is also a member of other Commissions.

 

Appointment of apostolic nuncio in Niger

The Holy Father has appointed Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, titular elect of Lindisfarne and apostolic nuncio in Burkina Faso, as apostolic nuncio in Niger.

 

Appointment of consultors of the Congregation for Catholic Education

The Holy Father has appointed as consultors of the Congregation for Catholic Education the distinguished Dr. Sjur Bergan, head of the Department of Higher Education and History Teaching at the Council of Europe, Norway-France, and Professor Gerald M. Cattaro, professor and executive director of the Center for Catholic School Leadership Administration and Policy at the Fordham University of New York, United States of America.
