Appointment of auxiliary of Rockville Centre, U.S.A.

The Holy Father has appointed as auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Rockville Centre, United States of America, the Reverend Fr. Luis Miguel Romero Fernández, M.Id., member of the Institute of Christ the Redeemer (Identes Missionaries), currently vicar for Hispanic ministry and for evangelisation, and parish priest of Our Lady of Loretto in Hempstead, New York, in the diocese of Rockville Centre, assigning him the titular see of Egara.

Reverend Fr. Luis Miguel Romero Fernández, M.Id.

The Reverend Fr. Luis Miguel Romero Fernández, M.Id., was born on 16 June 1954 in Palencia, Spain, in the diocese of the same name, and grew up in Andalusia. In 1972 he entered the Institute of Christ the Redeemer (Identes Missionaries), carrying out his ecclesiastical studies at the International Seminary of Identes Missionaries in Tenerife, Spain (1974-1980). He studied biological sciences at the University of Seville (1978), and subsequently philosophy and literature at the Autonomous University of Madrid (1985). He was then awarded a doctorate in medicine from the University of Zaragoza (1987). He has published numerous articles in biology, theology, philosophy and education.

He was ordained a priest on 11 September 1981 in Tenerife.

He held the following offices as religious priest from 1981 to 1987 in Zaragoza, from 1987 to 1996 in La Paz, Bolivia, from 1996 to 1997 in Santiago, Chile, from 1996 to 2009 in Loja, Ecuador, from 2009 to 2011 in Cadiz, Spain, from 2011 to 2013 in Cochin, India, and from 2014 in New York, United States of America: provincial superior, spiritual director, chaplain for university and youth pastoral care and for a convent, professor and researcher, adjunct director of the department of the degree in religious sciences, parish priest, vicar forane, and president and rector/chancellor of the Private Technical University in Loja. From 2009 to 2010 he simultaneously held offices in the Institutes of Rome and Madrid. Since 2014 he has served as parish priest in Hempstead, New York, and since 2019 vicar for Hispanic ministry and for evangelisation of the diocese of Rockville Centre, New York.
