Resignation of metropolitan archbishop of Cumaná, Venezuela, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Cumaná, Venezuela, presented by H.E. Msgr. Diego Rafael Padrón Sánchez.

The Holy Father has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of Cumaná, Venezuela, H.E. Msgr. Jesús González de Zárate Salas, currently titular bishop of Suava and auxiliary of Caracas, Venezuela.

H.E. Msgr. Jesús González de Zárate Salas

H.E. Msgr. Jesús González de Zárate Salas was born in Cumaná on 27 December 1960. He attended the major seminary in Caracas and was ordained a priest on 11 January 1986, and incardinated in the archdiocese of Caracas. He holds a licentiate in spiritual theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. As a priest he worked as seminary formator, parish priest, director of the Office for Catechesis, episcopal vicar, chargé for economic affairs and vicar general. On 15 October 2007 he was appointed as auxiliary bishop of Caracas, and he was consecrated on 12 January 2008. He served as secretary of the Episcopal Conference from 2009 to 2015.

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Maracaibo, Venezuela, presented by H.E. Msgr. Ubaldo Ramón Santana Sequera, F.M.I.

The Holy Father has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of Maracaibo, Venezuela, H.E. Msgr. José Luis Azuaje Ayala, currently bishop of Barinas, Venezuela.

H.E. Msgr. José Luis Azuaje Ayala

H.E. Msgr. José Luis Azuaje Ayala was born in Valera in the diocese of Trujillo on 6 December 1957. He carried out his theological studies in the diocesan seminary of Trujillo and was ordained a priest on 5 May 1984, and incardinated in Trujillo. He obtained a licentiate in fundamental theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, a licentiate in philosophy from the Santa Rosa de Lima University Institute in Caracas, a licentiate in education from the Simón Rodríguez National University, and a licentiate in political and administrative science from the Valle del Momboy University of Trujillo where he was also awarded an honorary doctorate in political sciences.

As a priest he has served as parish priest of various parishes, episcopal vicar for pastoral care and diocesan director of the Secretariats for Catechesis and for Social Pastoral Care. On 18 March 1999 he was appointed as auxiliary bishop of Barquisimeto, and received episcopal consecration on the following 29 May. On 15 July 2006 he was transferred to El Vigía-San Carlos del Zulia, and on 30 August 2013 to Barinas. He is currently president of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference and President of Caritas for Latin America.

 

Appointment of bishop of Bayombong, Philippines

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of Bayombong, Philippines, H.E. Msgr. Monsignor José Elmer Imas Mangalinao, transferring him from the titular see of Urusi and from the auxiliary office of Lingayen-Dagupan.

H.E. Msgr. Monsignor José Elmer Imas Mangalinao

H.E. Msgr. Monsignor José Elmer Imas Mangalinao was born in Cabiao, Nueva Ecija, in the diocese of Cabanatuan on 7 April 1960. After attending elementary and secondary schools, he studied philosophy and theology at the San Carlos Seminary, Makaty City.

He received priestly ordination on 15 October 1985 for the diocese of Cabanatuan. Until 1993 he served as spiritual director at the Maria Assunta Seminary of Cabanatuan City, while also holding the position of parish vicar at the Saint Isidore the Worker parish. He was sent to Rome from 1993 to 1995 where he obtained a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University.

After returning to his diocese, he served first as seminary formator, then first episcopal vicar for pastoral planning and pastor of the Three Kings parish in Gapan. Then, in 2006, he was appointed as vicar general and member of the college of consulters. From 2008 to 2014 he also served as parish priest of the Cathedral. In 2014, while retaining the post of vicar general, he also began to serve as Dean of the College of the Immaculate Conception in Cabanatuan City.

On 31 May 2016 he was elected as titular bishop of Urusi and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan, receiving episcopal consecration on 22 August of the same year.
