Unification of the diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall with the archdiocese of Ottawa, Canada, and appointment of bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall-Ottawa

The Holy Father Francis has united, “in persona episcopi”, the diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall with the archdiocese of Ottawa, and has appointed H.E. Msgr. Terrence Thomas Prendergast, S.J., archbishop of Ottawa, also as bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall.

H.E. Msgr. Terrence Thomas Prendergast, S.J.

H.E. Msgr. Terrence Thomas Prendergast, S.J., was born on 19 February in Montréal. He entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in 1961 and was ordained a priest on 10 June 1972. He obtained a doctorate in theology in Toronto, from the Atlantic School of Theology. He taught from 1975 to 1981 at the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax.

From 1981 to 1987 he was rector of the Regis College in Toronto, and from 1991 to 1995 professor and dean of the Faculty of Theology.

On 22 February 1995 he was appointed as auxiliary bishop of Toronto, and consecrated the subsequent 25 April. Then, on 30 June 1998 he was promoted as archbishop of Halifax and from 2002, also apostolic administrator of Yarmouth. Finally, on 14 May 2007 he was appointed as archbishop of Ottawa and installed the following 26 June.
