The Holy Father has appointed:
- Bishop Irineu Andreassa, O.F.M., of Lages, Brazil, as bishop of Ituiutaba (area 22,398, population 377,000, Catholics 324,880, priests 45, permanent deacons 1, religious 59), Brazil.
- Msgr. Geovanni Mauricio Paz Hurtado as bishop of Latacunga (area 6,072, population 373,000, Catholics 326,000, priests 54, permanent deacons 1, religious 50), Ecuador. The bishop-elect was born in 1962 in Cotacochi, Ecuador and was ordained a priest in 1988. He has served as pastor of various parishes in Ecuador, until in 1997 he was sent as a missionary to Cuba, where he remained until 2006 as a parish priest in the diocese of Cienfuegos. Upon his return to Ecuador he served as parish priest in Ibarra and Otavalo. He is currently vicar general of Ibarra, parish priest of the Basilica of La Dolorosa and professor of missiology in the major seminary. He succeeds Bishop José Victoriano Naranjo Tovar, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese was accepted by the Holy Father.
