Vatican City, 28 June 2016 – The Holy Father appointed:
Fr. Henricus Pidyarto Gunawan, O. Carm., as bishop of Malang (area 24,400, population 16,263,447, Catholics 82,634, priests 146, religious 1,181), Indonesia. The bishop-elect was born in Malang, Indonesia in 1955, gave his religious vows in 1981 and was ordained a priest in 1982. He holds a licentiate in sacred scripture from the Pontifical Biblicum Institute, Rome, and a degree in biblical theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), Rome. He has served in a number of roles, including lecturer in sacred Scripture at the "Widya Sasana" Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute; vice rector of the Indonesia Biblical Society; director of the Indonesia Biblical Society, parish priest, member of the Spiritual Committee of the Carmelitan Institute in Rome, and director of the postgraduate programme of the "Widya Sasana" Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute. He is currently rector of the "Widya Sasana" Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute. He succeeds Bishop Joseph Sahadat Pandoyoputro, O. Carm., whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same diocese upon reaching the age limit was accepted by the Holy Father.
- Fr. Alexis Mitsuru Shirahama, P.S.S., as bishop of Hiroshima (area 31,819, population 7,568,827, Catholics 20,712, priests 58, religious 244), Japan. The bishop-elect was born in Kamigoto, Japan in 1962 and was ordained a priest in 1990. He holds a Bachelor's degree in philosophy from the Keio University of Tokyo, Japan, and a licentiate in liturgy from the Institut Catholique de Paris, France. He has served as formator in the St. Sulpice Seminary of Fukuoka, member of the liturgical commission of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Japan and lecturer in liturgy and sacramental theology. He is currently rector of the National Catholic Seminary of Japan in Fukuoka.
