Vatican City, 18 May 2016 – The Holy Father has appointed:

- Rev. Fr. Sylvain Bataille as bishop of Saint-Etienne (area 3,035, population 596,555, Catholics 468,000, priests 146, religious 170), France. The bishop-elect was born in Soissons, France in 1964 and was ordained a priest in 1989. He holds a degree in sacramental theology from the Institut Catholique, Paris. He has been a member of the St. John Mary Vianney Society, a clerical association of Pontifical right, since 1990. He has served in a number of pastoral roles, including parish vicar, member of the diocesan service for vocations, parish priest, member of the episcopal and presbyteral councils, formator and subsequently rector of the seminary of Ars, and rector of the Pontifical French Seminary in Rome. He is currently parish priest of Chaumont-en-Vexin and vicar general of Beauvais.

- Bishop Gilberto Pastana de Oliveira of Imperatriz, Brazil, as coadjutor of the diocese of Crato (area 17,984, population 1,025,304, Catholics 820,140, priests 117, permanent deacons 18, religious 165), Brazil.
