Resignation and appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Valencia, Spain

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Valencia, Spain, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Enrique Benavent Vidal as metropolitan archbishop of Valencia, transferring him from the diocese of Tortosa.

Curriculum vitae

Archbishop-elect Enrique Benavent Vidal was born on 25 April 1959 in Quatretonda, in the archdiocese and province of Valencia. He attended the seminary of Moncada and the San Vicente Ferrer Faculty of Theology. In 1993 he was awarded a doctorate from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome.

He was ordained a priest on 8 November 1982.

He has held the following offices: deputy parish priest and teacher of religion in Alcoy (1982-1985); formator in the major seminary of Moncada and teacher of theology for the formation of deacons (1985-1990); episcopal delegate for the pastoral care of vocations (1993-1997); professor of dogmatic theology at the San Vicente Ferrer Faculty of Theology (1993-2004) and at the Valencia Section of the Pontifical Institute “John Paul II” for Studies on Marriage and Family (1994-2004); director of the San Juan de Ribera Major College of Burjassot (1999-2004); vice-dean and director of the diocesan section of the San Vicente Ferrer Faculty of Theology (2001-2004); member of the Presbyteral Council (2003-2004).

He was appointed titular bishop of Rotdon and auxiliary of Valencia on 8 November 2004, receiving episcopal ordination the following 8 January. He was transferred to Tortosa on 17 May 2013. Within the Spanish Episcopal Conference, he is a member of the Commission for Seminaries and Universities, and for the Doctrine of the Faith (2008-2017). He has served as chair of the latter since 2017.
