Pubblichiamo di seguito la Lettera che il Santo Padre Francesco ha inviato al Rettore della Pontificia Università San Tommaso d’Aquino – Angelicum, Padre Michał Paluch, O.P., in occasione dell’inaugurazione, presso l’Università, dell’Istituto di Cultura “San Giovanni Paolo II”, nella ricorrenza del centenario della nascita:

Nel giorno in cui ricorre il centenario della nascita di San Giovanni Paolo II, il più illustre alunno di codesta Università, viene inaugurato all’Angelicum, presso la Facoltà di Filosofia, l’Istituto di Cultura a lui intitolato. Desidero esprimere il mio apprezzamento per questa iniziativa e rivolgere un cordiale saluto all’intera comunità accademica e a quanti sono convenuti per l’evento, in particolare ai rappresentanti delle due Fondazioni polacche, Futura Iuventa e Saint Nicholas, che sostengono il nuovo Istituto.
Esso ha come finalità principale la riflessione sulla cultura contemporanea. A tale scopo i promotori intendono avvalersi della collaborazione dei più eminenti filosofi, teologi e uomini e donne di cultura, nella sua più vasta espressione. E San Giovanni Paolo II è, di quest’opera, al tempo stesso l’ispiratore e il primo e più importante artefice, con il ricco e multiforme patrimonio che ha lasciato e, prima ancora, con l’esempio del suo spirito aperto e contemplativo, appassionato di Dio e dell’uomo, del creato, della storia e dell’arte.
Le sue varie esperienze di vita, tra cui segnatamente i drammi epocali e le sofferenze personali, interpretate nella luce dello Spirito, lo condussero a sviluppare con singolare profondità la riflessione sull’uomo e sulle sue radici culturali, come riferimento imprescindibile per ogni proclamazione del Vangelo. Nella sua prima Enciclica, infatti, scrisse: «Ci accostiamo in pari tempo a tutte le culture, a tutte le concezioni ideologiche, a tutti gli uomini di buona volontà. Ci avviciniamo con quella stima, quel rispetto e quel discernimento che, sin dai tempi degli Apostoli, contrassegnavano l’atteggiamento missionario e del missionario. Basta ricordare San Paolo e, ad esempio, il suo discorso davanti all’Areopago di Atene. L’atteggiamento missionario inizia sempre con un sentimento di profonda stima di fronte a ciò che “c’è in ogni uomo”, per ciò che egli stesso, nell’intimo del suo spirito, ha elaborato riguardo ai problemi più profondi e più importanti; si tratta di rispetto per tutto ciò che in lui ha operato lo Spirito, che “soffia dove vuole”» (Redemptor hominis, 12; cfr Discorso all’UNESCO, 2 giugno 1980).
Abbiamo bisogno di tenere vivo questo atteggiamento, se vogliamo essere Chiesa in uscita, Chiesa che non si accontenta di conservare e amministrare l’esistente ma vuole essere fedele alla sua missione.
Sono molto lieto che questa iniziativa si realizzi nell’Università San Tommaso d’Aquino. L’Angelicum infatti ospita una comunità accademica costituita da professori e studenti provenienti dal mondo intero ed è un luogo adatto per interpretare le importanti sfide delle culture di oggi. La tradizione dell’Ordine Domenicano, con il ruolo importante che vi occupa la riflessione razionale sulla fede e i suoi contenuti, articolata in modo magistrale dal Dottore Angelico, non può che favorire tale progetto, affinché sia caratterizzato dal coraggio della verità, dalla libertà di spirito e dall’onestà intellettuale (cfr S. Paolo VI, Lett. ap. Lumen Ecclesiae, 20 novembre 1974, 8; S. Giovanni Paolo II, Enc. Fides et ratio, 43).
Con questi auspici, rinnovo il mio incoraggiamento e la mia riconoscenza a Lei, caro fratello, e a quanti hanno dato vita al nuovo Istituto. A professori, studenti e personale auguro buon lavoro e invio di cuore la Benedizione Apostolica.

On the centenary of the birth of Saint John Paul II, the most illustrious alumnus of your university, the Institute of Culture named after him is being inaugurated at the Angelicum, within the Faculty of Philosophy. In expressing my appreciation for this initiative, I cordially greet the entire academic community and all those present for the event, especially the representatives of the two Polish Foundations, Futura Iuventa and Saint Nicholas, which support the new Institute.
The principal aim of the Institute is to reflect on contemporary culture. To do so, the organizers intend to seek the collaboration of eminent philosophers, theologians and men and women of culture in its broadest sense. Saint John Paul II is at once both the inspiration behind this project and its first and most important architect. This is thanks to the rich and multifaceted heritage that he left to us, and even more so by the example of his open and contemplative spirit, his passion for God and man, for creation, history and art.
The range of experiences that marked his life, especially the momentous historical events and the personal sufferings that he sought to interpret in the light of the Spirit, led Saint John Paul II to an even deeper reflection on man and his cultural roots as an essential reference point for every proclamation of the Gospel. Indeed, in his first Encyclical he wrote: “We approach all cultures, all ideological concepts, all people of good will. We approach them with the esteem, respect and discernment that since the time of the Apostles has marked the missionary attitude, the attitude of the missionary. Suffice it to mention Saint Paul and, for instance, his address in the Areopagus at Athens. The missionary attitude always begins with a feeling of deep esteem for ‘what is in man’, for what man has himself worked out in the depths of his spirit concerning the most profound and important problems. It is a question of respecting everything that has been brought about in him by the Spirit, which ‘blows where it wills’” (Redemptor Hominis, 12; cf. Address to UNESCO, 2 June 1980).
We need to keep this approach alive if we wish to be an outward-looking Church, not satisfied with preserving and administering what already exists but seeking to be faithful to our mission.
I am pleased that this initiative has found a home in the University of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The Angelicum in fact houses an academic community comprising professors and students from throughout the world and is a fitting place for interpreting the important challenges of today’s cultures. The tradition of the Dominican Order, with the important role given to rational reflection on faith and its content, articulated in a magisterial way by the Angelic Doctor, will certainly favour this project, so that it will be characterized by the courage of the truth, freedom of spirit and intellectual honesty (cf. SAINT PAUL VI, Apostolic Letter Lumen Ecclesiae, 20 November 1974, 8; SAINT JOHN PAUL II, Encyclical Letter Fides et Ratio, 43).
With these sentiments, I renew my encouragement and gratitude to you, dear brother, and to all those who have established the new Institute. To the professors, students and staff I send my best wishes for their work, and to all I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing.

W dniu, w którym upływa sto lat od urodzin Świętego Jana Pawła II, najznakomitszego z absolwentów tegoż Uniwersytetu, na Wydziale Filozofii Angelicum rozpoczyna działalność Instytut Kultury jego imienia. Pragnę wyrazić moje uznanie dla tej inicjatywy, a także przekazać serdeczne pozdrowienie całej społeczności akademickiej oraz wszystkim, których wydarzenie to zgromadziło, szczególnie zaś przedstawicielom dwóch polskich Fundacji, Futura Iuventa oraz Fundacji Świętego Mikołaja, które wspierają nowy Instytut.
Głównym zadaniem Instytutu ma być refleksja nad kulturą współczesną. W tym celu założyciele zamierzają oprzeć się na współpracy z najwybitniejszymi filozofami, teologami oraz ludźmi kultury w jej najszerszym rozumieniu. Sam zaś Święty Jan Paweł II jest dla owego dzieła zarówno inspiracją, jak i pierwszym i najważniejszym twórcą, z uwagi na bogate i wieloaspektowe dziedzictwo, jakie nam pozostawił, a wcześniej jeszcze na dany przezeń przykład otwartego i kontemplacyjnego umysłu, rozmiłowanego w Bogu i człowieku, w stworzeniu, historii oraz sztuce.
Różnorodne doświadczenia życiowe, obejmujące największe tragedie jego czasów oraz osobiste cierpienie, postrzegane w świetle Ducha Świętego, prowadziły go do wyjątkowo głębokiej refleksji nad człowiekiem i jego kulturowymi korzeniami jako nieodzownym punktem odniesienia dla głoszenia Ewangelii. I tak, w swej pierwszej Encyklice, napisał: „Zbliżamy się równocześnie do wszystkich kultur, światopoglądów, do wszystkich ludzi dobrej woli. Zbliżamy się z tą czcią i poszanowaniem, jakie od czasów apostolskich stanowiły o postawie misyjnej i misjonarskiej. Wystarczy przypomnieć św. Pawła, choćby jego przemówienie na ateńskim Areopagu. Postawa misyjna i misjonarska zaczyna się zawsze w poczuciu głębokiego szacunku dla tego, co «w człowieku się kryje», dla tego, co już on sam w głębi swojego ducha wypracował w zakresie spraw najgłębszych i najważniejszych - szacunku dla tego, co już w nim zdziałał ten Duch, który «tchnie: tam, gdzie chce»” (Redemptor hominis, 12; por. Przemówienie wygłoszone w siedzibie UNESCO, Paryż, 2 czerwca 1980).
Stoi przed nami zadanie zadbania o żywotność takiej postawy, jeśli pragniemy być Kościołem w drodze, Kościołem, któremu nie wystarczy pielęgnowanie i zarządzanie tym, co jest, ale który pragnie pozostać wierny swej misji.
Bardzo cieszy mnie fakt, że inicjatywa ta związana jest z Uniwersytetem Świętego Tomasza z Akwinu. Angelicum gromadzi wszak społeczność akademicką, profesorów i studentów pochodzących z całego świata i stanowi właściwe miejsce prowadzenia refleksji nad kluczowymi wyzwaniami, wobec których stoi dzisiejsza kultura. Tradycja Zakonu Dominikańskiego, zważywszy na istotną rolę, jaką zajmuje w niej racjonalny namysł nad wiarą i jej treściami, po mistrzowsku wyrażony przez Doktora Anielskiego, z pewnością sprzyjać będzie tego rodzaju projektowi, sprawiając, że będzie go cechować odwaga prawdy, wolność ducha i intelektualna uczciwość (por. Św. Paweł VI, List apostolski Lumen Ecclesiae, 20 listopada 1974, 8; Św. Jan Paweł II, Encyklika Fides et ratio, 43).
Życząc tego, raz jeszcze ślę słowa zachęty oraz uznania dla Ciebie, drogi Bracie i dla wszystkich, którzy powołali do życia nowy Instytut. Profesorom i studentom oraz całemu personelowi życzę owocnej pracy i z serca przesyłam Błogosławieństwo Apostolskie.
