Christians and Muslims: Protecting together the places of worship
Dear Muslim brothers and sisters,
The month of Ramadan is so central in your religion and therefore dear to you at personal, familial and social levels. lt is a time for spiritual healing and growth, of sharing with the poor, of strengthening bonds with relatives and friends.
For us, your Christian friends, it is a propitious time to further strengthen our relationships with you, by greeting you, meeting you on this occasion and, where possible, by sharing in an iftar with you. Ramadan and 'Jd al-Fitr thus are special occasions to foster fraternity between Christians and Muslims. It is in this spirit that the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue offers its prayerful best wishes and hearty congratulations to you all.
The thoughts we like to share with you this year following our cherished tradition are about the protection of the places of worship.
As we all know, the places of worship occupy an important place in Christianity and Islam, and in other religions as well. For both Christians and Muslims, churches and mosques are spaces reserved for prayer, personal and communitarian alike. They are constructed and furnished in a way that favours silence, reflection and meditation. They are spaces where one can go deep in himself/herself, so favouring for God-experience in silence. A place of worship of any religion therefore is "a house of prayer" (Isaiah, 56, 7).
Places of worship are also spaces for spiritual hospitality, where believers of other religions also join for some special ceremonies like weddings, funerals, feasts of the community etc. While they participate in the events in silence and with due respect to the religious observances of the believers of that particular religion, they also savour the hospitality accorded to them. Such practice is a privileged witness to what unites believers, without diminishing or denying what distinguishes them.
In this regard, it is worthwhile to recall what Pope Francis said when he made a visit to the Heydar Aliyev Mosque, in Baku (Azerbaijan) on Sunday, 2 October 2016: "Meeting one another in fraternal friendship in this place of prayer is a powerful sign, one that shows the harmony which religions can build together, based on personal relations and on the good will of those responsible".
In the context of recent attacks on churches, mosques and synagogues by wicked persons who seem to perceive the places of worship as a privileged target for their blind and senseless violence, it is worth noting what the Document on "Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together", signed by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Dr. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, in Abu Dhabi, on 4 February 2019, said: "The protection of places of worship - synagogues, churches and mosques - is a duty guaranteed by religions, human values, laws and international agreements. Every attempt to attack places of worship or threaten them by violent assaults, bombings or destruction, is a deviation from the teachings of religions as well as a clear violation of international law".
While appreciating the efforts done by the international community at different levels for the protection of the places of worship worldwide, it is our hope that our mutual esteem, respect and cooperation will help strengthen the bonds of sincere friendship, and enable our communities to safeguard the places of worship to assure for coming generations the fundamental freedom to profess one's own beliefs.
With renewed esteem and fraternal greetings, in the name of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, we convey friendly wishes for a fruitful month of Ramadan and a joyous 'Id al-Fitr.

Chrétiens et Musulmans: protéger ensemble les lieux de culte
Chers frères et sœurs musulmans,
Le mois de Ramadan est si central dans votre religion qu’il vous est particulièrement cher au niveau personnel, familial et social. C’est un moment de guérison spirituelle et de croissance, de partage avec les pauvres, de raffermissement des liens avec vos proches et vos amis.
Pour nous, vos amis chrétiens, c’est aussi un moment favorable pour resserrer davantage nos relations avec vous, en vous apportant nos salutations et en vous rencontrant à cette occasion et, quand cela est possible, en partageant avec vous un iftar. Le Ramadan et ‘Id al-Fitr sont donc une occasion spéciale pour favoriser la fraternité entre chrétiens et musulmans. Dans cet esprit, le Conseil Pontifical pour le Dialogue Interreligieux adresse à vous tous ses vœux priants et ses chaleureuses félicitations.
Dans le sillage de notre tradition, les pensées que nous souhaitons partager avec vous cette année concernent la protection des lieux de culte.
Comme nous le savons tous, les lieux de culte revêtent une place importante dans le christianisme et dans l’islam, mais aussi dans les autres religions. Pour les chrétiens comme pour les musulmans, les églises et les mosquées sont des espaces réservés à la prière, que celle-ci soit personnelle ou communautaire. Elles sont construites et décorées de manière à favoriser le silence, la réflexion et la méditation. Elles définissent aussi un espace où chacun peut revenir au plus profond de lui- même, favorisant l’expérience de Dieu dans le silence. Ainsi, le lieu de culte de toute religion est « une maison de prière » {Isaïe 56, 7).
Les lieux de culte sont aussi des lieux d’« hospitalité spirituelle », des lieux où des croyants d’autres religions peuvent se retrouver lors de cérémonies particulières, comme les mariages, les funérailles et autres activités communautaires. Tout en participant à ces événements en silence, et dans le respect des observances religieuses des croyants de cette religion particulière, ils goûtent également l’hospitalité qui leur est accordée. Ce type de coutume constitue un témoignage privilégié de ce qui unit les croyants, sans diminuer ou nier ce qui les distingue.
A cet égard, il vaut la peine de rappeler ce que le Pape François a dit lorsqu’il s’est rendu en visite à la mosquée Heydar Aliyev, à Bakou (Azerbaïdjan) le dimanche 2 octobre 2016 : « Nous rencontrer dans l’amitié fraternelle en ce lieu de prières est un grand signe, un signe qui manifeste cette harmonie que les religions peuvent construire ensemble, à partir des relations personnelles et de la bonne volonté des responsables ».
Dans le cadre des récentes attaques perpétrées contre des églises, des mosquées et des synagogues par des personnes malintentionnées qui semblent percevoir les lieux de culte comme une cible privilégiée de leur violence aveugle et insensée, il convient de noter que le Document sur la fraternité humaine pour la paix mondiale et la coexistence commune, signé par le Pape François et le Grand Imam d’Al-Azhar, Dr. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, le 4 février 2019, à Abou Dhabi, déclare : « La protection des lieux de culte - temples, églises et mosquées - est un devoir garanti par les religions, par les valeurs humaines, par les lois et par les conventions internationales. Toute tentative d’attaquer les lieux de culte ou de les menacer par des attentats, des explosions ou des démolitions est une déviation des enseignements des religions, ainsi qu’une claire violation du droit international ».
Convaincus des efforts déployés par la communauté internationale à différents niveaux pour la protection des lieux de culte dans le monde, nous espérons que notre estime mutuelle, notre respect et notre coopération contribueront à accroître les liens d’amitié sincère et permettront à nos communautés de sauvegarder les lieux de culte pour assurer aux générations à venir la liberté fondamentale de professer leurs propres croyances.
Avec une estime renouvelée et nos fraternelles salutations, nous transmettons, au nom du Conseil Pontifical pour le Dialogue Interreligieux, nos vœux amicaux pour un mois de Ramadan fructueux et un joyeux ‘Idal-Fitr.

Cari fratelli e sorelle musulmani,
Il mese di Ramadan è così centrale nella vostra religione e perciò a voi tanto caro a livello personale, familiare e sociale. È un tempo di guarigione spirituale, di crescita e di condivisione con i poveri e di rafforzamento dei legami con parenti ed amici.
Per noi, vostri amici cristiani, è un tempo propizio per consolidare le nostre relazioni con voi, mediante i saluti, gli incontri e, dove è possibile, con la condivisione di un iftar. Il Ramadan e ‘Id al-Fitr sono, dunque, occasioni speciali per far crescere la fraternità tra cristiani e musulmani. È questo lo spirito con cui il Pontificio Consiglio per il Dialogo Interreligioso porge a tutti voi i suoi migliori auguri oranti e cordiali congratulazioni.
Seguendo una tradizione a noi cara, vogliamo condividere con voi alcuni pensieri, che riguardano quest'anno la protezione dei luoghi di culto.
Sappiamo che i luoghi di culto rivestono una grande importanza nel cristianesimo e nell'islam, come pure nelle altre religioni. Sia per i cristiani, sia per i musulmani chiese e moschee sono spazi riservati alla preghiera personale e comunitaria, edificati ed arredati in modo da favorire il silenzio, la riflessione e la meditazione. Esse sono spazi dove si può arrivare nelle profondità del proprio animo, facilitando così, con il silenzio, l'esperienza di Dio. Pertanto, un luogo di culto di qualsiasi religione è “casa di preghiera” (Isaia 56, 7).
I luoghi di culto sono pure spazi di ospitalità spirituale, nei quali i seguaci di altre religioni si radunano anche per cerimonie speciali come nozze, funerali, feste della comunità, ecc. Partecipando a quegli eventi in silenzio e col rispetto dovuto alle osservanze religiose dei seguaci di quella particolare religione, essi assaporano l'ospitalità loro riservata. Questa pratica è una speciale testimonianza di ciò che unisce i credenti, senza sminuire o negare ciò che li distingue.
Sotto questo aspetto vale la pena ricordare ciò che Papa Francesco ha detto in visita alla moschea Heydar Aliyev, a Baku (Azerbaijan), domenica 2 ottobre 2016: “È un grande segno incontrarci in amicizia fraterna in questo luogo di preghiera, un segno che manifesta quell'armonia che le religioni insieme possono costruire, a partire dai rapporti personali e dalla buona volontà dei responsabili”.
Nel contesto dei recenti attacchi contro chiese, moschee e sinagoghe, perpetrati da persone malvage che sembrano percepire i luoghi di culto come bersaglio preferito della loro cieca e insensata violenza, è degno di nota quanto è riportato nel Documento sulla “Fratellanza umana per la pace mondiale e la convivenza comune”, firmato da Papa Francesco e dal Gran Imam di Al-Azhar, il Dott. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, ad Abu Dhabi, il 4 febbraio 2019: “La protezione dei luoghi di culto - templi, chiese e moschee - è un dovere garantito dalle religioni, dai valori umani, dalle leggi e dalle convenzioni internazionali. Ogni tentativo di attaccare i luoghi di culto o di minacciarli attraverso attentati o esplosioni o demolizioni è una deviazione dagli insegnamenti delle religioni, nonché una chiara violazione del diritto internazionale”.
Apprezzando gli sforzi compiuti dalla comunità internazionale a vari livelli per la protezione dei luoghi di culto in tutto il mondo, è nostra speranza che la stima vicendevole, il rispetto reciproco e la cooperazione possano rafforzare i nostri legami di sincera amicizia, e consentire alle nostre comunità di salvaguardare i luoghi di culto per assicurare alle future generazioni la libertà fondamentale di professare le proprie credenze.
Con rinnovata stima e fraterni saluti, a nome del Pontificio Consiglio per il Dialogo Interreligioso, porgiamo auguri amicali di un fruttuoso mese di Ramadan e di un gioioso ‘Id al-Fitr.

أيّها الأخوة والأخوات المسلمون الأعزاء،
يُعتَبر شهرُ رمضان محوريًا في دينكم، وبالتالي فهو عزيز عليكم على المستويات الشخصية والعائلية والاجتماعية. إنّه وقت للشفاء الروحي والنموّ ومساعدة الفقراء، ولتقوية الروابط مع الأقارب والأصدقاء.
وبالنسبة لنا، نحن أصدقاءكم المسيحيين، فهو وقت ملائم لتعزيز علاقاتنا معكم، من خلال لقائكم في هذه المناسبة والمشاركة، حيث أمكن، في إفطار. وبالتالي فإن رمضان وعيد الفطر مناسبات خاصّة لتعزيز الأخوّة بين المسيحيين والمسلمين. وبهذه المشاعر، يقدّم لكم المجلس البابوي للحوار بين الأديان أطيب تمنياته وتهانيه القلبية، يرافقها الدعاء.
تدور الخواطر التي نودّ مشاركتكم إيّاها، كما جرت العادة، هذا العام حول حماية أماكن العبادة.
تحتلّ أماكن العبادة، كما نعلم جميعًا، مكانة هامة في المسيحية وفي الإسلام، وكذلك في الأديان الأخرى. فالكنائس والمساجد هي، بالنسبة للمسيحيين والمسلمين، أماكن مخصّصة للصلاة الشخصية والجماعية على حدّ سواء. وهي مبنيّة ومؤثَّثة بطريقة تساعد على الصمت والتأمّل. إنها فضاءات يمكن للمرء أن يتوجّه بفضلها الى أعماق نفسه، مما يُهيّئ الفرصة لخبرة روحية في صمت. فمكان العبادة لأي دين هو”بيت للصلاة“ (أشعيا 56، 7).
أماكن العبادة هي كذلك مساحات للضيافة الروحية، حيث يشترك أحيانًا بعض المؤمنين من ديانات أخرى في مناسبات خاصّة، مثل حفلات الزفاف والجنازات وأعياد اجتماعية وغير ذلك. وتكون مشاركتهم في تلك المناسبات في صمت ومع الاحترام الواجب للاحتفالات الدينية لمؤمني تلك الديانة، فيتذوّقون الضيافة المقدَّمة لهم. هذه الممارسة هي شهادة مميَّزة لما يوحّد المؤمنين، دون تقليل أو إنكار لما يميّزهم.
ويجدر التذكير، في هذا الصدد، بما قاله البابا فرنسيس عندما قام بزيارة مسجد حيدر علييف، في باكو (أذربيجان) يوم الأحد، 2 تشرين الأول / أكتوبر 2016: ” لقاء بعضنا البعض في صداقة أخويّة في مكان الصلاة هذا هو علامة قويّة تُظهر الانسجام الذي يمكن للأديان أن تَبنيه معًا، على أساس العلاقات الشخصيّة وحُسن نيّة المسؤولين“.
في سياق الهجمات الأخيرة على الكنائس والمساجد والمعابد اليهودية من قِبل أناس أشرار يَظهر أنّهم يعتبرون أماكن العبادة هدفًا مميّزًا لعنفهم الأعمى المجنون، تجدر الإشارة إلى وثيقة ”الأخوّة الإنسانية من أجل السلام العالمي والعيش المشترك“، التي وقّعها البابا فرنسيس وشيخ الأزهر الشريف، الدكتور أحمد الطيّب، في أبو ظبي، في 4 شباط / فبراير 2019: ”إنّ حماية أماكن العبادة - المعابد والكنائس والمساجد - هي واجبٌ تضمنه الأديان والقيَم الإنسانية والقوانين والاتفاقيات الدولية. كل محاولة لمهاجمة أماكن العبادة أو تهديدها عن طريق الاعتداءات العنيفة أو التفجيرات أو التدمير، هي انحراف عن تعاليم الأديان وكذلك انتهاك واضح للقانون الدولي“.
ومع تقدير الجهود التي يبذلها المجتمع الدَولي على مختلف المستويات لحماية أماكن العبادة في جميع أنحاء العالم، فإننا نأمل أن يساعد تقديرُنا المتبادَل واحترامُ أحدنا الآخر وتعاونُنا المشترَك على تقوية أواصر الصداقة المُخلِصة التي تربِطنا، وعلى تمكين مجتمعاتنا من صون أماكن العبادة حتى تُضمَن للأجيال القادمة الحريةُ الأساسية للتعبير كلٌّ عن معتقداته.
ومع التحيات الأخويّة وتجديد مشاعر التقدير، أوجّه لكم، باسم المجلس البابوي للحوار بين الأديان، التمنيات الوُدّية لشهر رمضان غنيّ بالثمار الروحية، ولعيد فطر سعيد.
