Discorso del Santo Padre
Cari amici,
sono lieto di salutare e di accogliere voi, che partecipate al Congresso semestrale della Federazione Internazionale di Hockey su ghiaccio. Ringrazio il Presidente della Federazione, Signor René Fasel, per le sue cortesi parole.
Lo sport è un canale davvero speciale per promuovere la pace e l’unità. Le attività sportive sono luoghi d’incontro, a cui accorrono insieme persone provenienti da molti contesti diversi. L’hockey è un buon esempio di come lo sport possa esprimere il senso dello stare insieme: è un gioco di squadra in cui ciascun giocatore ha un ruolo importante da svolgere. E ogni volta, ai Campionati mondiali, si può vedere la gioia di persone provenienti da tanti Paesi diversi, la gioia di ritrovarsi insieme per sperimentare la bellezza dello sport.
È importante anche tener presente che lo sport ha un ruolo da svolgere nella crescita e nello sviluppo integrale. Ecco perché la Chiesa apprezza lo sport in sé stesso, come un campo dell’attività umana in cui si possono promuovere le virtù della sobrietà, dell’umiltà, del coraggio e della pazienza e si può testimoniare di aver incontrato realtà belle, buone, vere e gioiose (cfr Dare il meglio di sé, 1 giugno 2018, 1.3).
È incoraggiante sapere che il vostro obiettivo, in quanto leader dell’hockey su ghiaccio internazionale, non è solo quello di disciplinare le linee-guida e le regole dello sport, ma anche di renderlo inclusivo e accessibile a livello globale. L’hockey su ghiaccio richiede abilità specifiche e resistenza. I giocatori devono padroneggiare le tecniche del pattinaggio e mantenere l’equilibrio sul ghiaccio, e devono pure seguire il movimento del disco e rialzarsi dopo una caduta. Sport del genere richiedono ore e ore di allenamento. E nel sostenere lo sviluppo di questo sport nel mondo, voi state spronando giovani e meno giovani, uomini e donne, a tirare fuori il meglio di sé e a promuovere relazioni amichevoli dentro e fuori la pista.
Inoltre, mi rallegro per il fatto che la vostra organizzazione ha ricevuto lo scorso maggio l’approvazione degli statuti e dei regolamenti aggiornati, e che è stato inserito un nuovo Consiglio etico. La mentalità odierna può a volte trascinare le attività sportive sulla via sbagliata, ma va tenuto presente che le regole esistono proprio per servire determinate finalità ed evitare di piombare nel caos. Gli atleti onorano il fair play non solo quando seguono formalmente le regole, ma anche quando osservano giustizia e rispetto nei riguardi degli avversari, in modo che tutti i concorrenti possano pacificamente partecipare al gioco (cfr ibid., 3.2).
Con questi sentimenti, incoraggio voi e la Federazione ad andare avanti, proseguendo la missione di rendere questo sport inclusivo e di garantire una sana atmosfera comunitaria a tutti coloro che vi aderiscono. Il Signore vi benedica e vi dia sempre la gioia di praticare lo sport insieme. Grazie.

Dear Friends,
I am happy to greet and welcome the participants of the International Ice Hockey Federation Semi-Annual Congress. I would like to thank the President of the Federation, Mr. René Fasel, for his kind words of greeting.
Sport is a very special channel for the promotion of peace and unity. Sporting activities are meeting places where people of many different backgrounds come together. Hockey is a good example of how sport can express a sense of community. It is a team game in which each team member has an important role to play. Whenever you take part in the World Championships, you can see how people from many different countries enjoy coming together to experience the beauty of sport.
It is also important to keep in mind that sport has a role to play in our growth and integral development. That is why the Church values sport in itself, as an arena of human activity where the virtues of temperance, humility, courage and patience can be fostered, and encounters with beauty, goodness, truth and joy can be witnessed (cf. Giving the best of yourself, 1 June 2018, 1.3).
As you are the leaders of international ice hockey, it is consoling to know that your goal is not only to control the guidelines and rules of the sport, but also to make it inclusive and available to individuals on a global level. Ice hockey requires unique skills and strength. Players have to master the techniques involved in skating and maintaining their balance on ice, and they also have to keep up with the movement of the puck and be able to get up after a fall. Sports like these require hours of training. As you support the development of this sport worldwide, you are encouraging young and old, men and women, to bring out the best of themselves and to promote friendly relationships on and off the ice rink.
Additionally, I would also like to acknowledge the fact that your organization received approval for its updated statutes and bylaws in May this year, and that a new Ethics Board has been included. Today’s culture may sometimes steer sporting activities down the wrong path, but we must keep in mind that rules are there to serve a specific purpose and to avoid a descent into chaos. Athletes honor fair play when they not only obey the formal rules but also observe justice with respect to their opponents so that all competitors can freely engage in the game (cf. ibid., 3.2).
With all of this in mind, I encourage you and your Federation to go forth and continue your special mission to make this sport inclusive and to ensure a safe community for all who take part.
May the Lord bless you and always give you the joy of sport being played together. Thank you.
