Alle ore 18.45 di questo pomeriggio, all’aeroporto di Lahr, ha luogo la Cerimonia di congedo del Santo Padre dalla Germania, alla presenza del Presidente Federale, S.E. il Signor Christian Wulff accompagnato dalla Consorte, di Autorità civili e religiose e di una rappresentanza di fedeli.
Dopo essersi intrattenuto per qualche minuto con il Presidente Federale e la Consorte nella Sala d’Onore dove viene firmato il Libro d’Oro della Città di Lahr, il Papa, introdotto dal discorso del Presidente Federale, pronuncia il discorso che pubblichiamo di seguito:

Sehr geehrter, lieber Herr Bundespräsident!
Verehrte Vertreter des Bundes,
des Landes Baden-Württemberg und der Gemeinden!
Liebe Mitbrüder im Bischofsamt!
Meine sehr geehrten Damen und Herren!

Bevor ich nun Deutschland verlasse, drängt es mich, Dank zu sagen für die vergangenen erlebnisreichen und bewegenden Tage in unserer Heimat.

Mein Dank gilt Ihnen, Herr Bundespräsident Wulff, der Sie mich in Berlin im Namen des deutschen Volkes empfangen und jetzt zum Abschied erneut durch Ihre freundlichen Worte geehrt haben. Ich danke den Vertretern der Bundes- und der Landesregierung, die zur Verabschiedung gekommen sind. Einen herzlichen Dank sage ich ebenfalls Erzbischof Zollitsch von Freiburg, der mich während der ganzen Reise begleitete. Gerne schließe ich auch Erzbischof Woelki von Berlin und Bischof Wanke von Erfurt in meinen Dank ein, die mir ebenfalls ihre Gastfreundschaft gezeigt haben, sowie dem gesamten deutschen Episkopat. Besonderer Dank gilt schließlich den vielen, die diese vier Tage im Hintergrund vorbereitet und für deren reibungslosen Ablauf Sorge getragen haben: den kommunalen Einrichtungen, den Sicherheitskräften, dem ärztlichen Dienst, den Verantwortlichen für die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel wie auch den zahlreichen freiwilligen Helfern. Allen Menschen danke ich für die eindrucksvolle Zeit und für die vielfältigen persönlichen Begegnungen sowie für die unzähligen Aufmerksamkeiten und Zeichen der Verbundenheit, die mir erwiesen wurden.

In der Bundeshauptstadt Berlin hatte ich die besondere Gelegenheit, vor den Abgeordneten des deutschen Bundestages zu sprechen und ihnen Gedanken über die geistigen Fundamente des Rechtsstaates vorzutragen. Gerne denke ich auch an die fruchtbaren Gespräche mit dem Bundespräsidenten und der Bundeskanzlerin über die augenblickliche Situation des deutschen Volkes und der Völkergemeinschaft zurück. Besonders berührt haben mich die freundliche Aufnahme und die große Begeisterung so vieler Menschen in Berlin.

Im Land der Reformation bildete naturgemäß die Ökumene einen Schwerpunkt der Reise. Hier möchte ich die Begegnung mit den Vertretern der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland im Augustinerkloster in Erfurt hervorheben. Für den brüderlichen Austausch und für das gemeinsame Gebet bin ich von Herzen dankbar. Bedeutungsvoll war aber auch das Zusammentreffen mit orthodoxen und orientalischen Christen sowie mit Juden und Muslimen.

Dieser Besuch galt natürlich besonders den Katholiken in Berlin, in Erfurt, im Eichsfeld und in Freiburg. Gerne erinnere ich mich an die gemeinsamen Gottesdienste, an die Freude, an das gemeinsame Hören des Wortes Gottes und das vereinte Beten und Singen – vor allem auch in den Teilen des Landes, in denen über Jahrzehnte hinweg versucht wurde, Religion aus dem Leben der Menschen zu verdrängen. Dies stimmt mich zuversichtlich für die Zukunft der Kirche in Deutschland und des Christentums in Deutschland. Wie schon bei den früheren Besuchen war erfahrbar, wie viele Menschen hier ihren Glauben bezeugen und seine gestaltende Kraft in der heutigen Welt gegenwärtig werden lassen.

Nicht zuletzt habe ich mich sehr gefreut, nach dem eindrucksvollen Weltjugendtag in Madrid auch in Freiburg bei der gestrigen Jugendvigil wieder mit vielen jungen Menschen zusammenzusein.

Ich möchte die Kirche in Deutschland ermutigen, mit Kraft und Zuversicht den Weg des Glaubens weiterzugehen, der Menschen dazu führt, zu den Wurzeln, zum wesentlichen Kern der Frohbotschaft Christi zurückzukehren. Es wird kleine Gemeinschaften von Glaubenden geben – und es gibt sie schon –, die in die pluralistische Gesellschaft mit ihrer Begeisterung hineinstrahlen und andere neugierig machen, nach dem Licht zu suchen, das Leben in Fülle schenkt. „Es gibt nichts Schöneres, als Christus zu kennen und den anderen die Freundschaft mit ihm zu schenken" (Predigt zur Amtseinführung 24. April 2005). Aus dieser Erfahrung wächst schließlich die Gewißheit: „Wo Gott ist, da ist Zukunft!" Wo Gott zugegen ist, da ist Hoffnung und da eröffnen sich neue, oft ungeahnte Perspektiven, die über den Tag und das nur Kurzlebige hinausreichen. In diesem Sinne begleite ich in Gedanken und im Gebet den Weg der Kirche in Deutschland.

Erfüllt von den eindrucksvollen Erlebnissen und Erinnerungen an diese Tage in der Heimat kehre ich nun nach Rom zurück. Mit der Zusicherung meines Gebets für Sie alle und für eine gute Zukunft unseres Landes in Frieden und Freiheit sage ich zum Abschied ein herzliches Vergelt’s Gott. Der Herr segne Sie alle!

Cari Confratelli nell’Episcopato,
Gentili Signore e Signori!

Prima di lasciare la Germania, mi preme ringraziare per i giorni trascorsi, così commoventi e ricchi di avvenimenti, nella nostra patria.

La mia gratitudine va a Lei, Signor Presidente Federale Wulff, che, a Berlino, mi ha accolto in nome del popolo tedesco ed ora, al momento del congedo, mi ha onorato di nuovo con le sue cortesi parole. Ringrazio i Rappresentanti del Governo Federale e dei Governi dei Länder che sono venuti alla cerimonia di congedo. Un grazie di cuore all’Arcivescovo di Friburgo Mons. Zollitsch, che mi ha accompagnato durante tutto il viaggio. Volentieri estendo i miei ringraziamenti anche all’Arcivescovo di Berlino Mons. Woelki, e al Vescovo di Erfurt Mons. Wanke, che mi hanno altrettanto mostrato la loro ospitalità, nonché all’intero Episcopato tedesco. Infine, rivolgo un ringraziamento particolare a quanti hanno preparato, dietro le quinte, questi quattro giorni, assicurando il loro svolgimento, senza intoppi: alle istituzioni comunali, alle forze dell’ordine, ai servizi sanitari, ai responsabili dei trasporti pubblici nonché ai numerosi volontari. Ringrazio tutti per queste splendide giornate, per i tanti incontri personali e per gli innumerevoli segni di attenzione e di affetto mostratimi.

Nella capitale federale Berlino ho avuto l’occasione particolare di parlare davanti ai parlamentari al Deutscher Bundestag ed esporre loro alcune riflessioni sui fondamenti intellettuali dello stato di diritto. Volentieri ripenso anche ai colloqui fruttuosi con il Presidente Federale e la Signora Cancelliere sulla situazione attuale del popolo tedesco e della comunità internazionale. Mi ha particolarmente toccato l’accoglienza cordiale e l’entusiasmo di così tante persone a Berlino.

Nel Paese della Riforma, l’ecumene ha costituto naturalmente uno dei punti centrali del viaggio. Qui vorrei rilevare l’incontro con i rappresentanti della "Chiesa Evangelica in Germania" nel già Convento agostiniano a Erfurt. Sono profondamente grato per lo scambio fraterno e la preghiera comune. Molto particolare è stato anche l’incontro con i cristiani ortodossi e ortodossi orientali, come pure con gli ebrei e i musulmani.

Ovviamente, questa visita era rivolta in particolare ai cattolici a Berlino, a Erfurt, nell’Eichsfeld e a Friburgo. Ricordo con piacere le celebrazioni liturgiche comuni, la gioia, l’ascoltare insieme la Parola di Dio e il pregare e il cantare uniti – soprattutto anche nelle parti del Paese in cui si è tentato per decenni di rimuovere la religione dalla vita delle persone. Questo mi rende fiducioso per il futuro della Chiesa in Germania e del cristianesimo in Germania. Come già durante le visite precedenti, si è potuto sperimentare quante persone qui testimoniano la propria fede e rendono presente la sua forza trasformante nel mondo di oggi.

Non da ultimo, sono stato molto lieto, dopo l’impressionante Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù a Madrid, di stare anche a Friburgo, di nuovo insieme con tanti giovani, ieri, alla veglia della gioventù. Desidero incoraggiare la Chiesa in Germania a proseguire con forza e fiducia il cammino della fede, che fa ritornare le persone alle radici, al nucleo essenziale della Buona Novella di Cristo. Ci saranno comunità piccole di credenti – e già esistono – che con il proprio entusiasmo diffondono raggi di luce nella società pluralistica, rendendo altri curiosi di cercare la luce che dà vita in abbondanza. "Non vi è niente di più bello che conoscere Lui e comunicare agli altri l’amicizia con lui" (Omelia per l’inizio solenne del Ministero petrino, 24 aprile 2005). Da questa esperienza cresce infine la certezza: "Dove c’è Dio, là c’è futuro". Dove Dio è presente, là c’è speranza e là si aprono prospettive nuove e spesso insospettate che vanno oltre l’oggi e le cose effimere. In questo senso accompagno, nei pensieri e nelle preghiere, il cammino della Chiesa in Germania.

Colmo di esperienze e ricordi, fortemente impressi, di questi giorni nella mia patria, ritorno ora a Roma. Con l’assicurazione delle mie preghiere per tutti voi e per un futuro buono per il nostro Paese in pace e libertà, mi congedo con un cordiale "Vergelt’s Gott" [Dio ve ne renda merito]. Dio vi benedica tutti!

Dear Brother Bishops,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Before leaving Germany, I would like very much to thank you for these days, so moving and eventful, spent in our native land.

I am grateful to you, President Wulff, for welcoming me in Berlin in the name of the German people and now, at the moment of my departure, for again honouring me with your gracious words. My thoughts turn to the representatives of the Federal Government and the governments of the Länder who are present at this departure ceremony. I offer heartfelt thanks to Archbishop Zollitsch of Freiburg, who accompanied me throughout the journey. I likewise express my gratitude to Archbishop Woelki of Berlin and Bishop Wanke of Erfurt, who also showed me hospitality, and to the entire German episcopate. Finally I offer a particular word of thanks to all those who worked behind the scenes before and during these four days in order to ensure that all went smoothly: to the civic institutions, to all those engaged in providing security, health services and public transport, and to the many volunteers. I thank all of you for these splendid days, for our many personal encounters and for your many signs of attention and affection.

In Berlin, the Federal Capital, I had the particular opportunity of addressing the members of the Bundestag and presenting some reflections on the intellectual foundations of the state of law. I also readily think of the fruitful conversations which I had with the Federal President and the Federal Chancellor about the present state of the German people and the international community. I was particularly touched by the cordial welcome and enthusiasm shown by so many people in Berlin.

Here in the land of the Reformation, Christian unity was naturally a high point of my journey. I would mention in particular my meeting with representatives of the Evangelical Church in Germany, which took place in the former Augustinian convent of Erfurt. I am profoundly grateful for our fraternal exchange and common prayer. Significant too were my meetings with Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Christians, as well with Jews and Muslims.

Of course my visit was particularly aimed at the Catholic communities in Berlin, Erfurt, Eichsfeld and Freiburg. I gladly recall our common liturgical celebrations and the joy which accompanied them, our common listening to the word of God and our union in prayer and song – especially in those parts of the country where efforts were made for decades to banish religion from people’s lives. This gives me confidence for the future of the Church in Germany and of Christianity in Germany. As in previous visits, it was clear how many people here are bearing witness to their faith and making its transforming power present in today’s world.

Last but not least, after the impressive celebration of World Youth Day in Madrid, I was also delighted to be in the presence of large numbers of young people in Freiburg at yesterday’s youth vigil.

I would like to encourage the Church in Germany to pursue with resolute confidence the path of faith which leads people back to their roots, to the heart of the Good News of Christ. It will be small communities of believers – and these already exist – whose enthusiasm spreads within a pluralistic society and makes others curious to seek the light which gives life in abundance. "There is nothing more beautiful than to know Christ and to speak to others of our friendship with him" (Homily for the Solemn Inauguration of the Petrine Ministry, 24 April 2005). This experience ultimately gives the certainty that "where God is, there is a future." Wherever God is present, there is hope: new and often unexpected horizons open up beyond the present and the ephemeral. In this sense I accompany in my thoughts and prayers the path of the Church in Germany.

With vivid memories of these days spent in my native land, I now return to Rome. With the assurance of my prayers for all of you, and for a future of peace and freedom for our country, I bid you farewell with a hearfelt "Vergelt’s Gott" [May God reward you]. God bless you all!
