Questa mattina, il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI ha ricevuto in Udienza Sua Eccellenza il Sig. Viktor Orbán, Primo Ministro della Repubblica di Ungheria, il quale ha successivamente incontrato Sua Eminenza il Cardinale Tarcisio Bertone, Segretario di Stato, accompagnato da Sua Eccellenza Mons. Dominique Mamberti, Segretario per i Rapporti con gli Stati.

Nel corso dei cordiali colloqui, il Primo Ministro ha illustrato l’attuale situazione sociale, economica e politica del Paese. È stata sottolineata l’importanza della tradizione cristiana nella vita della Nazione ed il ruolo della Chiesa Cattolica per il suo rinnovamento. Ci si è poi intrattenuti sul prossimo semestre di Presidenza ungherese dell’Unione Europea, rilevando alcune convergenze di vedute tra l’Ungheria e la Santa Sede sui principali temi che interessano il continente europeo. Infine, sono stati passati in rassegna alcuni temi riguardanti le relazioni e la cooperazione nella regione.

On the morning of Monday, 6 December, the Holy Father Benedict XVI received in audience His Excellency Mr. Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of the Republic of Hungary, who successively met with the Secretary of State, His Eminence Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, accompanied by His Excellency Msgr. Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States.

During the cordial discussion, the prime minister outlined the country's current social, economic, and political situation. The importance of the Christian tradition in the life of the nation and the role of the Catholic Church for its renewal was emphasized. The next semester of Hungarian presidency of the European Union was then discussed, highlighting some convergences of vision between Hungary and the Holy See on major themes that concern the European continent. Finally, a few items regarding relations and cooperation in the region were covered.
