Alle ore 17.45, all’aeroporto internazionale di Larnaca, ha luogo la Cerimonia di congedo. In risposta al discorso del Presidente della Repubblica di Cipro, S.E. il Sig. Demetris Christofias, il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI pronuncia il discorso che riportiamo di seguito:

Mr President,
Distinguished Authorities,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The time has now come for me to leave you, after my brief but fruitful Apostolic Journey to Cyprus.
Mr President, I thank you for your kind words and I am happy to express my gratitude to you for all that you, your Government and the civil and military authorities have done to make my visit such a memorable and successful one.
As I depart your shores, like many pilgrims before me I am reminded again of how the Mediterranean is made up of a rich mosaic of peoples with their distinctive cultures and their beauty, their warmth and their humanity. In spite of that reality, the Eastern Mediterranean is at the same time no stranger to conflict and bloodshed, as we have tragically witnessed in recent days. Let us all redouble our efforts to build a real and lasting peace for all the peoples of the region.
Together with that general objective, Cyprus can play a particular role in promoting dialogue and cooperation. Striving patiently for the peace of your own hearths and for the prosperity of your neighbours, you will then be well placed to hear and understand all sides of many complex issues, and to help peoples to come to a greater understanding of one another. The path that you are taking, Mr President, is one which the international community looks to with great interest and hope, and I note with satisfaction all the efforts that have been made to favour peace for your people and for the whole island of Cyprus.
As I give thanks to God for these days which saw the first encounter of the Catholic community in Cyprus with the Successor of Peter on their own soil, I also recall with gratitude my meetings with other Christian leaders, in particular with His Beatitude Chrysostomos the Second and the other representatives of the Church of Cyprus, whom I thank for their brotherly welcome. I hope that my visit here will be seen as another step along the path that was opened up before us by the embrace in Jerusalem of the late Patriarch Athenagoras and my venerable predecessor Pope Paul the Sixth. Their first prophetic steps together show us the road that we too must tread. We have a divine call to be brothers, walking side by side in the faith, humble before almighty God, and with unbreakable bonds of affection for one another. As I invite my fellow Christians to continue this journey, I would assure them that the Catholic Church, with the Lord’s grace, will herself pursue the goal of perfect unity in charity through an ever deepening appreciation of what Catholics and Orthodox hold dearest.
Let me also express again my sincere hope and prayer that, together, Christians and Muslims will become a leaven for peace and reconciliation among Cypriots and serve as an example to other countries.
Finally, Mr President, let me encourage you and your Government in your high responsibilities. As you well know, among your most important tasks is that of assuring the peace and security of all Cypriots. Having stayed these past nights in the Apostolic Nunciature, which happens to be in the United Nations buffer zone, I have seen for myself something of the sad division of the island, as well as learning of the loss of a significant part of a cultural heritage which belongs to all humanity. I have also listened to Cypriots from the north who wish to return in peace to their homes and places of worship, and I have been deeply moved by their pleas. Surely truth and reconciliation, together with respect, are the soundest foundation for the united and peaceful future of this island, and for the stability and prosperity of all her people. Much good has been achieved in this regard through substantive dialogue in recent years, though much remains to be done to overcome divisions. Let me encourage you and your fellow citizens to work patiently and steadfastly with your neighbours to build a better and more certain future for all your children. As you do so, be assured of my prayers for the peace of all Cyprus.

Signore e Signori,
è giunto ormai il tempo per me di lasciarvi, dopo il mio breve ma fruttuoso Viaggio Apostolico a Cipro.
Signor Presidente, la ringrazio per le gentili parole e sono felice di esprimere la mia gratitudine a Lei per tutto quello che Lei, il suo Governo e le Autorità civili e militari hanno fatto per rendere la mia visita un memorabile successo.
Mentre lascio la vostra terra, come molti pellegrini prima di me, ricordo ancora come il Mediterraneo è formato da un ricco mosaico di popoli con le loro proprie culture e le loro bellezze, calore ed umanità. Nonostante tale realtà, il Mediterraneo Orientale, al medesimo tempo, non è estraneo a conflitto e spargimento di sangue, come abbiamo tragicamente visto negli ultimi giorni. Raddoppiamo i nostri sforzi al fine di costruire una pace reale e duratura per tutti i popoli della regione.
Assieme a questo obiettivo generale, Cipro può giocare un ruolo particolare nel promuovere il dialogo e la cooperazione. Impegnandovi pazientemente per la pace dei vostri focolari domestici e per la prosperità dei vostri vicini, voi sarete ben preparati ad ascoltare e comprendere tutti gli aspetti di molte complesse questioni, ed aiutare i popoli a giungere ad una maggiore comprensione gli uni degli altri. La strada che state percorrendo è una di quelle alle quali la comunità internazionale guarda con grande interesse e speranza e noto con soddisfazione tutti gli sforzi compiuti per favorire la pace per il vostro popolo e per tutta l’isola di Cipro.
Mentre rendo grazie a Dio per questi giorni che hanno visto il primo incontro della comunità cattolica di Cipro con il successore di Pietro nella vostra terra, ricordo anche con gratitudine i miei incontri con le altre autorità cristiane, in particolare Sua Beatitudine Crisostomo II e gli altri rappresentanti della Chiesa di Cipro che ringrazio per la loro fraterna accoglienza. Spero che la mia visita qui possa essere un ulteriore passo lungo il cammino che è stato aperto prima di noi con l’abbraccio a Gerusalemme dell’allora Patriarca Atenagora ed il mio venerabile predecessore Papa Paolo VI. I loro primi passi profetici compiuti insieme ci hanno indicato la strada che anche noi dobbiamo percorrere. Abbiamo un appello divino ad essere fratelli, a camminare fianco a fianco nella fede, umili davanti a Dio onnipotente e con inscindibili legami di affetto l’uno per l’altro. Nell’invitare i fedeli cristiani a continuare questo cammino, desidero assicurarli che la Chiesa Cattolica, con la grazia di Dio, impegnerà se stessa per raggiungere l’obiettivo della perfetta unità nella carità tramite una stima più profonda verso ciò che Cattolici ed Ortodossi hanno di più caro.
Lasciatemi anche esprimere ancora la mia sincera speranza e preghiera che, insieme, Cristiani e Musulmani diverranno un lievito di pace e riconciliazione tra i Ciprioti e ciò sarà di esempio per gli altri Paesi.
Infine, Signor Presidente, mi permetta di incoraggiare Lei ed il suo Governo nella vostra alta responsabilità. Come ben sapete, fra i vostri compiti più importanti vi è quello di assicurare la pace e la sicurezza di tutti i Ciprioti. Avendo pernottato in questi ultimi giorni nella Nunziatura Apostolica, che si trova nella zona cuscinetto sotto il controllo delle Nazioni Unite, ho potuto vedere di persona qualcosa della triste divisione dell’isola, come pure rendermi conto della perdita di una parte significativa di un’eredità culturale che appartiene a tutta l’umanità. Ho potuto anche ascoltare Ciprioti del nord che vorrebbero ritornare in pace alle loro case e ai loro luoghi di culto, e sono stato profondamente toccato dalle loro richieste. Certamente, verità e riconciliazione, insieme al mutuo rispetto, sono il fondamento più solido per un futuro in unità e pace per quest’isola e per la stabilità e prosperità di tutti i suoi abitanti. Molto di positivo è stato raggiunto, a questo riguardo, negli anni scorsi, per mezzo di un dialogo concreto, benché ancora molto rimanga da fare per superare le divisioni. Mi permetta di incoraggiare Lei ed i suoi concittadini a lavorare con pazienza e costanza con i vostri vicini per costruire un futuro migliore e più sicuro per tutti i vostri figli. In questo impegno, sia certo delle mie preghiere per la pace di tutta Cipro.

Mesdames et Messieurs,
Le temps est venu pour moi de vous quitter, après mon bref mais fructueux voyage apostolique à Chypre.
Monsieur le Président, je vous remercie pour vos paroles aimables et je suis heureux de vous exprimer ma gratitude pour tout ce que Vous-même, votre Gouvernement et les autorités civiles et militaires avez fait pour que ma visite soit mémorable et couronnée d’un grand succès.
En quittant vos rivages, comme beaucoup de pèlerins avant moi, il m’est venu à l’esprit, une fois encore, combien la Méditerranée est composée d’une riche mosaïque de peuples ayant leurs propres cultures et leur beauté, leur cordialité et leur humanité. En même temps et en dépit de cette réalité, l’Orient méditerranéen n’est pas épargné par les conflits et le sang qui coule, comme nous en avons été témoins tragiquement ces jours derniers. Redoublons nos efforts pour construire une paix réelle et durable pour tous les peuples de la région.
Dans cet objectif général, Chypre peut jouer un rôle particulier dans la promotion du dialogue et de la coopération. En œuvrant patiemment pour la paix sur votre sol et pour la prospérité de vos voisins, vous serez alors bien placés pour écouter et comprendre tous les aspects des nombreuses questions dans leur complexité, afin d’aider les peuples à atteindre une plus grande compréhension mutuelle. Le chemin que vous empruntez, Monsieur le Président, est l’un de ceux que la communauté internationale regarde avec un grand intérêt et une grande espérance, et je relève avec satisfaction tous les efforts effectués en faveur de la paix pour votre peuple et l’île toute entière de Chypre.
Tout en remerciant Dieu pour ces journées durant lesquelles la Communauté catholique chypriote a vécu, sur son propre sol, sa première rencontre avec le Successeur de Pierre, je me rappelle aussi avec gratitude, de mes rencontres avec les responsables des autres églises chrétiennes, en particulier avec Sa Béatitude Chrysostomos II et avec les autres représentants de l’Église de Chypre, que je remercie pour leur accueil fraternel. J’espère que ma visite, ici à Chypre, sera vue comme un autre pas du parcours initié avant nous à Jérusalem, par l’accolade entre le regretté Patriarche Athenagoras et mon vénéré Prédécesseur le Pape Paul VI. Ces premiers pas prophétiques nous indiquent le chemin que nous devons aussi emprunter. Nous sommes appelés par Dieu à être frères, en marchant côte à côte dans la foi, humblement devant le Dieu tout-puissant, unis par des liens indestructibles d’affection les uns pour les autres. Alors que j’invite mes frères chrétiens à poursuivre cette marche, j’aimerais les assurer que l’Église Catholique, avec la grâce de Dieu, poursuivra elle-même la recherche de l’unité parfaite dans la charité, à travers une valorisation toujours plus profonde de ce que les Catholiques et les Orthodoxes ont de plus cher.
Qu’il me soit permis d’exprimer encore mon espérance et mon vœu sincère que les Chrétiens et les Musulmans deviennent un levain pour la paix et pour la réconciliation parmi les Chypriotes, et servent ainsi d’exemple pour les autres pays.
Pour conclure, Monsieur le Président, je désire vous encourager, Vous et votre Gouvernement dans vos hautes responsabilités. Comme vous le savez bien, parmi vos tâches les plus importantes figure la recherche de la paix et de la sécurité pour tous les Chypriotes. Ayant passé les dernières nuits dans la Nonciature Apostolique, qui se trouve dans la zone tampon sous le contrôle des Nations unies, j’ai vu de mes propres yeux quelque chose de la triste division de l’île, et je me suis rendu compte de la perte d’une partie significative d’un héritage culturel qui appartient à toute l’humanité. J’ai également pu entendre les Chypriotes du nord qui souhaitent retourner en paix dans leurs maisons et leurs lieux de culte, et j’ai été profondément touché par leurs requêtes. La vérité et la réconciliation, ainsi que le respect, sont certainement les fondations les plus sûres pour un avenir uni et pacifique de cette île, et pour la stabilité et la prospérité de tout votre peuple. Au cours de ces dernières années, beaucoup de bien a été accompli dans ce sens à travers un dialogue substantiel, cependant beaucoup encore demeure à faire pour surmonter les divisions. Qu’il me soit permis de vous encourager, ainsi que vos concitoyens, à travailler patiemment avec vos voisins à l’édification d’un avenir meilleur et plus assuré pour tous vos enfants.
Faisant ainsi, soyez assuré de mes prières pour la paix de Chypre entière.

Conclusa con la benedizione di un albero di ulivo e il saluto alle Autorità presenti la cerimonia di congedo all’aeroporto internazionale di Larnaca, il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI sale a bordo dell’aereo - un A320 della Cyprus Airways - che decolla alle 18.15 locali alla volta di Roma.
Nell’atto di lasciare il territorio cipriota, il Papa fa pervenire al Presidente della Repubblica di Cipro, il Sig. Demetris Christofias, il seguente messaggio telegrafico:
