Pubblichiamo di seguito la Lettera che il Prefetto della Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali, l’Em.mo Card. Leonardo Sandri, ha inviato ai Pastori della Chiesa Universale affinché sostengano la Terra Santa:

Eccellenza Reverendissima,
Con la preparazione alla Pasqua del Signore torna l’appello ai Pastori della Chiesa Universale affinché sostengano la Terra Santa, offrendo la preghiera, la partecipazione vigilante e la concretezza della generosità.
Nel "noi" della Chiesa trova motivazione la sensibilità per le necessità della Chiesa di Gerusalemme e del Medio Oriente. Sensibilità che si fa soccorso, come quello inviato ai fratelli della Giudea (At 11,29-30); ricordo, come l’invito di San Paolo nella lettera ai Galati (2,10), e colletta, che risponde a precise indicazioni pratiche (1 Cor 16,1-6) ed è definita grazia di prendere parte al servizio a favore dei santi (2 Cor 8-9 e Rm 15).
Il nostro appello quest’anno trae ispirazione dal pellegrinaggio compiuto "sulle orme storiche di Gesù" dal Santo Padre Benedetto XVI nel maggio scorso.
Ho avuto l’onore di accompagnarLo e di condividere l’ansia pastorale, ecumenica e interreligiosa che ne hanno animato le parole e i gesti.
Insieme alla comunità ecclesiale di Israele e Palestina ho ascoltato "una voce" di fraternità e di pace.
Sottolineando fortemente il problema incessante dell’emigrazione, Sua Santità ha ricordato che "nella Terra Santa c’è posto per tutti"! Ed ha esortato le autorità a sostenere la presenza cristiana, ma nel contempo ha assicurato ai cristiani di quella Terra la solidarietà della Chiesa.
Nella Santa Messa a Betlemme, Egli ha poi incoraggiato i battezzati ad essere "un ponte di dialogo e di collaborazione costruttiva nell’edificare una cultura di pace che superi l’attuale stallo della paura, dell’aggressione e della frustrazione", perché le Chiese locali siano "laboratori di dialogo, di tolleranza e di speranza, come pure di solidarietà e di carità pratica.
L’anno sacerdotale impegna a favore dei Luoghi Santi, insieme ai rispettivi Vescovi, i carissimi presbiteri e seminaristi di tutta la Chiesa. Torniamo, perciò, col cuore al Cenacolo di Gerusalemme, dove il Maestro e Signore "ci amò sino alla fine"; a quel luogo dove gli Apostoli con la Santa Madre del Crocifisso Risorto vissero la prima Pentecoste. Crediamo fermamente nel "fuoco mai spento" dello Spirito Santo, che il Vivente effonde in abbondanza. E prodighiamoci instancabilmente per garantire un futuro ai cristiani là dove apparvero "la benignità e l’umanità" del Nostro Dio e Padre.
Il Papa ha affidato alla Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali il compito di tenere vivo l’interesse per quella Terra benedetta. A Suo nome esorto tutti a confermare la solidarietà finora mostrata. I cristiani d’Oriente portano, infatti, una responsabilità che spetta alla Chiesa universale, quella cioè di custodire le "origini cristiane", i luoghi e le persone che ne sono il segno, perché quelle origini siano sempre il riferimento della missione cristiana, la misura del futuro ecclesiale e la sua sicurezza. Essi meritano, pertanto, l’appoggio di tutta la Chiesa.
Unisco un documento informativo, che illustra le opere compiute dalla Custodia di Terra Santa con la Colletta 2009. E ricordo che diversi interventi vengono realizzati dal Patriarcato Latino di Gerusalemme e dalle Chiese Orientali Cattoliche in Israele e Palestina sempre grazie all’annuale Colletta.
Prego il Signore perché sia largo nella ricompensa verso quanti amano la Terra che Gli diede i natali: essa deve rimanere, grazie alla "Chiesa viva e giovane" che vi opera, la testimone nei secoli delle grandi opere della salvezza.
In comunione con i pastori e i cristiani di Terra Santa, auguro una Pasqua colma delle benedizioni divine.

Your Excellency,
The preparation for Easter once again launches the appeal to the Pastors of the universal Church to support the Holy Land by offering prayers, attentive participation and practical generosity.
Sensitivity to the needs of the Church in Jerusalem and in the Middle East finds its motivation in the "we" of the Church. This sensitivity becomes help, like the relief sent to the brethren who lived in Judea (Acts 11:29-30); remembrance, like St Paul’s invitation in his Letter to the Galatians (2:10), and a collection that responds to precise practical instructions (1 Cor 16:1-6) and is described as the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints (2 Cor 8-9 and Rom 15).
Our appeal this year is inspired by the pilgrimage "in the historical footsteps of Jesus" which the Holy Father Benedict XVI made last May.
I had the honor of accompanying him and of sharing the pastoral, ecumenical and interreligious concern that enlivened his words and actions.
Together with the ecclesial community of Israel and Palestine I listened to "a voice" of brotherhood and peace.
Strongly emphasizing the ceaseless problem of emigration, His Holiness recalled that "in the Holy Land there is room for everyone"! And he urged the authorities to support the Christian presence but at the same time assured the Christians of this land of the Church’s solidarity.
At Holy Mass in Bethlehem, he then encouraged the baptized to be "a bridge of dialogue and constructive cooperation in the building of a culture of peace to replace the present stalemate of fear, aggression and frustration" so that the local Churches might be "workshops of dialogue, tolerance and hope, as well as of solidarity and practical charity".
The Year for Priests involves the beloved priests and seminarians of the whole Church, together with their respective Bishops, in a commitment to the Holy Places. Let us, therefore, return in our hearts to the Upper Room in Jerusalem where the Teacher and Lord "loved us to the end"; to that place where the Apostles with the Holy Mother of the Risen Crucified One experienced the first Pentecost. We firmly believe in the "flame" of the Holy Spirit "which is never extinguished" and which the Living One spreads in abundance. And let us work tirelessly to guarantee a future to Christians in the place where "the kindness and humanity" of Our God and Father first appeared.
The Pope has entrusted to the Congregation for the Eastern Churches the task of keeping alive interest in that blessed Land. In his name I urge everyone to reinforce the solidarity that has been shown so far. In fact, the Christians of the East have a responsibility that belongs to the universal Church, in other words the responsibility to preserve the "Christian origins", the places and people who are the sign of them, so that those origins may always be the reference of the Christian mission, the measure of the ecclesial future and its security. They therefore deserve the support of the entire Church.
I enclose an informative document that illustrates all that the Custody of the Holy Land has been able to achieve with the 2009 Collection. And I recall that it is always thanks to the annual Collection that various interventions can be carried out by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and by the Eastern Catholic Churches in Israel and in Palestine.
I pray the Lord that he may lavishly reward those who love the Land that gave birth to him: it must remain, thanks to the "lively and youthful Church" which works there, a witness down the centuries to the great works of salvation.
In communion with the pastors and Christians of the Holy Land, I wish you an Easter filled with divine blessings.

Excellence,
Avec la préparation de la Pâque du Seigneur, l’appel aux pasteurs de l’Eglise Universelle revient pour demander leur soutien à la Terre-Sainte, par l’offrande de leur prière et de leur générosité.
Dans notre appartenance à l’Eglise s’enracine notre sensibilité pour les nécessités de l’Église de Jérusalem et du Moyen-Orient. Sensibilité qui se fait secours, comme celui envoyé aux frères de Judée (Ac. 11, 29-30); souvenir, comme l’invitation de Saint Paul dans la Lettre aux Galates (Ac. 2, 10); et collecte, qui répond à des indications pratiques précises (1 Cor 16, 1-6), définie grâce de prendre part au service en faveur des saints (2 Cor 8-9 et Rm 15).
L’appel de cette année s’inspire du pèlerinage accompli "sur les traces historiques de Jésus" par le Saint Père Benoît XVI en mai dernier.
J’ai eu l’honneur de l’accompagner et d’en partager le souci pastoral, œcuménique et interreligieux qui en ont animé les paroles et les gestes. De l’ensemble de la communauté chrétienne d’Israël et de Palestine, j’ai entendu un appel à la fraternité et à la paix.
Soulignant avec force le problème incessant de l’émigration, Sa Sainteté a redit que "dans la Terre-Sainte, il y a une place pour tous"! Il a exhorté les autorités à soutenir la présence chrétienne, mais Il a assuré aussi la solidarité de l’Eglise aux chrétiens de cette Terre.
Lors de la messe à Bethléem, Il a encouragé les baptisés à être "des ponts de dialogue et de coopération constructive pour l’édification d’une culture de paix qui doit remplacer l’impasse actuelle des peurs et des agressions", parce que les Eglises locales sont des "ateliers de dialogue, de tolérance et d’espérance, en même temps que des havres de solidarité et de charité concrète".
L’Année Sacerdotale engage en faveur des Lieux-Saints, avec leurs évêques respectifs, les prêtres et les séminaristes de toute l’Eglise. Revenons au Cénacle où le Maître et Seigneur "nous a aimés jusqu’au bout"; dans ce lieu où les Apôtres avec la Sainte Mère du Crucifié Ressuscité ont vécu la première Pentecôte. Croyons fermement dans ce feu de l’Esprit-Saint que le Vivant infuse en abondance. Donnons-nous sans relâche pour garantir aux chrétiens un futur là où "la bonté et l’humanité" de Notre Dieu et Père sont apparus.
Le Pape a confié à la Congrégation pour les Eglises Orientales la tâche de susciter un vif intérêt pour cette Terre bénie. En Son nom, je vous exhorte tous à confirmer cette solidarité dont vous avez déjà fait preuve. Les chrétiens d’Orient portent, de fait, une responsabilité qui revient à l’Eglise Universelle, celle de garder les "origines chrétiennes", les lieux et les personnes qui en sont le signe, parce que ces origines sont toujours la référence de la mission chrétienne, la mesure du futur de l’Eglise et Sa sécurité. C’est pourquoi, ils méritent l’appui de toute l’Eglise.
Je joins un document d’information, qui illustre les œuvres réalisées avec la Quête 2009 par la Custodie de Terre-Sainte. Je rappelle que ces différentes interventions sont réalisées par le Patriarcat Latin de Jérusalem, par les Eglises Orientales Catholiques en Israël et Palestine, toujours grâce à cette Quête.
Je prie le Seigneur pour qu’Il soit généreux dans Sa récompense pour ceux qui aiment cette Terre: Elle doit rester, grâce à "l’Eglise vivante et jeune" qui y travaille, le témoin dans les siècles des grandes œuvres du Salut.
En communion avec tous les pasteurs et les chrétiens de Terre-Sainte, je vous souhaite une Pâque comblée des bénédictions de Dieu.

Exzellenz, Hochwürdigster Herr Bischof,
Mit den Vorbereitungen auf das Osterfest kehrt auch der Aufruf an die Hirten der Weltkirche wieder, das Heilige Land zu unterstützen mit dem Opfer des Gebets und mit konkreten Gesten der Großzügigkeit.
Unsere Zugehörigkeit zur kirchlichen Gemeinschaft macht uns sensibel für die Bedürfnisse der Kirche in Jerusalem und im Mittleren Osten. Diese Sensibilität wird zur konkreten Unterstützung, wie jene, die an die Brüder in Judäa gesandt wurde (Apg 11, 29f.); sie wird zum Gedenken an die Armen, wie der Hl. Paulus im Galaterbrief mahnt (Gal 2, 10), und zur Kollekte, die auf präzise praktische Erfordernisse antwortet (1 Kor 16, 1-6). Sie versteht sich als Gnade, Anteil zu haben am Dienst an den Heiligen (2 Kor 8-9 und Röm 15).
Unser Aufruf ist in diesem Jahr inspiriert von der Pilgerfahrt des Heiligen Vaters Benedikts XVI. auf den „historischen Spuren Jesu" im Mai vergangenen Jahres.
Ich hatte die Ehre, ihn begleiten zu dürfen und seine pastoralen, ökumenischen und interreligiösen Anliegen, die seine Worte und Gesten geprägt haben, zu teilen. Von den Christen in Israel und Palästina haben wir einen einmütigen Appell zur Brüderlichkeit und zum Frieden vernommen.
Mit Blick auf das bleibende Problem der Auswanderung erinnerte Seine Heiligkeit daran, dass „im Heiligen Land Platz ist für alle"! Er ermahnte die politischen Führer, die Christen im Heiligen Land zu unterstützen, und zugleich sicherte er den Gläubigen vor Ort die Solidarität der Kirche zu.
Bei der Heiligen Messe in Betlehem ermutigte er die Getauften, „eine Brücke des Dialogs und der konstruktiven Zusammenarbeit beim Aufbau einer Kultur des Friedens zu sein, die uns aus der gegenwärtigen festgefahrenen Lage von Furcht und Aggression herausführen kann." Die Christen sollten ihre Ortskirchen aufbauen, damit diese „zu Werkstätten des Dialogs, der Toleranz und der Hoffnung, der Solidarität und der tatkräftigen Liebe" werden.
Das Priesterjahr ruft zum Einsatz für die Heiligen Stätten auf, gemeinsam mit den Bischöfen, den geschätzten Priestern und Seminaristen der ganzen Kirche. Begeben wir uns deshalb mit unserem Herzen in den Abendmahlssaal in Jerusalem, wo unser Meister und Herr „uns liebte bis zur Vollendung"; dorthin, wo die Apostel gemeinsam mit der Mutter des Auferstandenen erstmals Pfingsten erlebten. Wir glauben fest an das „nie erlöschende Feuer" des Heiligen Geistes, das der Lebendige reichlich ausgießt. Setzen wir uns unermüdlich dafür ein, dass die Christen dort, wo die „Menschenfreundlichkeit und Güte" unseres Gottes und Vaters erschienen ist, eine bleibende Zukunft haben.
Der Papst hat der Ostkirchenkongregation die Aufgabe anvertraut, das Interesse für jenes gesegnete Land wach zu halten. In seinem Namen fordere ich Sie dazu auf, die bisher gezeigte Großzügigkeit beizubehalten. Die Christen des Orients haben nämlich eine Verantwortung, die die ganze Weltkirche betrifft, nämlich die „christlichen Ursprünge" zu wahren, die Orte und Personen, die für sie stehen. Jene Ursprünge müssen immer Bezugspunkt der christlichen Mission bleiben, das Maß der kirchlichen Zukunft und ihre Sicherheit. Daher verdienen sie die Unterstützung der ganzen Kirche.
Ich füge diesem Schreiben eine Information der „Kustodie im Heiligen Land" über die Verwendung der Kollekte des vergangenen Jahres bei. Ich möchte Sie darauf hinweisen, dass viele Projekte des Lateinischen Patriarchats und der katholischen Ostkirchen in Israel und Palästina nur dank der jährlichen Kollekte möglich sind.
Ich bitte den Herrn, dass er denen, die das Land Jesu lieben, ihre Großzügigkeit reichlich vergelten möge: Das Heilige Land hat die Aufgabe, dank der dort wirkenden „lebendigen und jungen Kirche" alle Zeit Zeugnis zu geben von großen Werken des Heils.
In Gemeinschaft mit den Hirten und den Christen im Heiligen Land wünsche ich ein vom Segen des Himmels erfülltes Osterfest.

Con la preparación para la Pascua del Señor se renueva la llamada a los Pastores de la Iglesia universal para que sostengan a la Tierra Santa, ofreciendo la oración, la participación vigilante y la concreción de la generosidad.
En el "nosotros" de la Iglesia encuentra motivación la sensibilidad por las necesidades de la Iglesia de Jerusalén y de Medio Oriente. Sensibilidad que se hace ayuda, como la enviada a los hermanos de la Judea (Hech. 11,29-30); recuerdo, como la invitación de San Pablo en la Carta a los Gálatas (2,10); y colecta, que responde a precisas indicaciones prácticas (1 Cor. 16,1-6) y ha sido definida gracia de tomar parte en el servicio a favor de los santos (2 Cor. 8-9 y Rm. 15).
Este año nuestra llamada se inspira en la peregrinación realizada "sobre las huellas históricas de Jesús" por el Santo Padre Benedicto XVI en el pasado mes de mayo.

Volvemos por ello con el corazón al Cenáculo de Jerusalén, donde nuestro Maestro y Señor "nos amó hasta el fin", a aquel lugar donde los Apóstoles con la Santa Madre del Crucificado Resucitado vivieron la primera Pentecostés. Creemos firmemente en el "fuego nunca apagado" del Espíritu Santo, que el Viviente efunde con abundancia. Y prodiguémonos incansablemente para garantizar un futuro a los cristianos allí donde aparecieron "la benignidad y la humanidad" de nuestro Dios y Padre.
El Papa ha confiado a la Congregación para las Iglesias Orientales el encargo de mantener vivo el interés por aquella Tierra bendita. En su Nombre exhorto para que se confirme la solidaridad mostrada hasta ahora. Los cristianos de Oriente tienen, en efecto, una responsabilidad que lo es de la Iglesia universal, la de custodiar los "orígenes cristianos", los lugares y las personas que de ellos son signos, para que estos orígenes sean siempre la referencia de la misión cristiana, la medida del futuro eclesial y su seguridad. Por tanto, merecen el apoyo de toda la Iglesia.
Adjunto un documento informativo, que ilustra las obras realizadas por la Custodia de la Tierra Santa con la Colecta 2009. Y recuerdo que diversas intervenciones pueden ser realizadas por el Patriarcado Latino de Jerusalén y por las Iglesias Orientales Católicas en Israel y Palestina sólo gracias a la Colecta anual.
Pido al Señor para que recompense abundantemente a cuantos aman la Tierra donde Él nació: ella, gracias a la "Iglesia viva y joven" que allí actúa, debe mantenerse como la testigo por los siglos de las grandes obras de la salvación.
En comunión con los Pastores y los cristianos de Tierra Santa, deseo a todos una Pascua llena de las bendiciones divinas.

Com a preparação para a Páscoa do Senhor se renova a chamada dos Pastores da Igreja universal para que apóiem a Terra Santa, oferecendo a oração, a participação vigilante e a concretização da generosidade.
No "nós" da Igreja encontra motivação a sensibilidade para com as necessidades da Igreja de Jerusalém e do Oriente Médio. Sensibilidade que se torna ajuda, como a enviada aos irmãos da Judéia (At. 11,29-30); memória, como o convite de São Paulo na Carta aos Gálatas (2,10); e coleta, que responde a precisas indicações práticas (1 Cor. 16,1-6) e foi definida graça de tomar parte no serviço a favor dos santos (2 Cor. 8-9 e Rm. 15).
Este ano a nossa chamada se inspira na peregrinação realizada "sobre as pegadas históricas de Jesus" pelo Santo Padre Bento XVI no mês de maio último.
Tive a honra de acompanhá-lo e de compartilhar o ardor pastoral, ecumênico e inter-religioso que animaram suas palavras e seus gestos.

O Papa confiou à Congregação para as Igrejas Orientais o encargo de manter vivo o interese por aquela Terra bendita. Em seu Nome exorto para que se confirme a solidariedade mostrada até agora. Os cristãos do Oriente têm, com efeito, uma responsabilidade que é da Igreja universal, a de custodiar as "origens cristãs", os lugares e as pessoas que deles são sinais, para que estas origens sejam sempre a referência da missão cristã, a medida do futuro eclesial e de sua segurança. Portanto, merecem o apoio de toda a Igreja.
Envio em anexo um documento informativo, que ilustra as obras realizadas pela Custodia da Terra Santa com a Coleta 2009 e recordo que muitas intervenções podem ser realizadas pelo Patriarcado Latino de Jerusalém e pelas Igrejas Orientais Católicas em Israel e Palestina somente graças à Coleta anual.
Rogo ao Senhor para que recompense abundantemente a quantos amam a Terra onde Ele nasceu: ela, graças à "Igreja viva e jovem" que lá atua, deve manter-se como a testemunha pelos séculos das grandes obras da salvação.

Rapporto sommario 2008/2009
La Custodia di Terra Santa in adempimento della sua secolare Missione di tutelare i Luoghi Santi della Redenzione, officiare in essi il culto, assistere i Pellegrini e incrementare le opere apostoliche ha prestato negli anni 2008/2009 una particolare attenzione alla promozione e all’esecuzione dei seguenti Progetti e Opere:
I. Luoghi Santi/Pellegrini
1. Ain Karem
- Conclusione del progetto di restauro dell’entrata al Santuario della Visitazione. Sondaggi e scavi archeologici nel piazzale principale, rifacimento completo dei condotti idrici e degli scarichi, restauro della lunga scalinata di accesso al Santuario.
- Conclusione del progetto nel Santuario di S. Giovanni nel Deserto del restauro dell’antico muro di cinta e di alcuni ambienti per l’accoglienza di singoli Pellegrini che compiono esperienza di Romitaggio. Rinnovo dell’intero impianto elettrico.
2. Betania
- Conclusione del progetto di restauro del Convento di S. Lazzaro. Cambio degli impianti elettrici ed idrici, rifacimento dei pavimenti del Convento, della Sacrestia e degli ambienti di accoglienza dei Pellegrini.
3. Betlemme
- Progetto di rinnovo del sistema di illuminazione della chiesa di S. Caterina a Betlemme con la tinteggiatura dell’intera chiesa.
- Continuazione del restauro degli ambienti di Casa Nova in vista del crescente afflusso dei Pellegrini.
4. Gerusalemme
- Progetto di restauro della Cappella del Ritrovamento della S. Croce nella Basilica del Santo Sepolcro e installazione di un nuovo sistema di protezione delle pareti.
- Progetto di risistemazione della Valle del Cedron tra il Santuario e le mura della Gerusalemme antica, preparazione degli spazi per l’accoglienza dei pellegrini, per la preghiera e per la meditazione. Costruzione di due nuovi complessi di servizi per l’uso dei pellegrini.
- Preparazione della celebrazione della S. Messa celebrata da Sua Santità Benedetto XVI nella Valle del Cedron.
- Restauro delle finestre della Basilica delle Nazioni. Preparazione del progetto del restauro della copertura della Basilica e dei mosaici.
- Restauro del Convento del Dominus Flevit e preparazione del progetto di risistemazione del giardino e degli spazi per l’accoglienza dei Pellegrini.
5. Giaffa
- Conclusione della seconda fase del restauro del Santuario di San Pietro in Giaffa, consistente nel rinnovo completo dell’interno del Convento e degli spazi per le attività pastorali per i lavoratori stranieri (lingua spagnola, francese e polacca) e per la comunità di espressione ebraica.
- Inizio del progetto di restauro del complesso del Convento di S. Antonio in Giaffa.
6. Magdala
- Progetto di conservazione dell’area archeologica di Magdala. Restauro e consolidamento dei resti rinvenuti in seguito alla campagna archeologica negli anni ’70. Si è reso inoltre necessario lo strappo, il restauro e il ricollocamento su adeguati supporti dei tappeti musivi pavimentali che dovranno essere protetti dagli agenti atmosferici. È in allestimento un percorso di visita all’interno delle rovine, che si presta efficacemente ad illustrare la vita quotidiana della cittadina al tempo di Gesù.
7. Nazareth
- Restauro completo dell’Auditorium utilizzato per l’incontro di Sua Santità Benedetto XVI con i Capi religiosi della Galilea. Preparazione della celebrazione presieduta dal Papa nella Chiesa superiore. Conclusione del restauro dei percorsi di accesso per le visite del Santuario e per le processioni.
- Continuazione del restauro della Grotta dell’Annunciazione.
- Preparazione del progetto della copertura dell’antica Chiesa in Seforis (che ricorda la natività ed infanzia della Vergine); pagamento delle seguenti rate per ottenere i permessi delle autorità per le antichità.
8. Monte Nebo (Giordania)
- Prima fase dei lavori in vista del rifacimento della Basilica memoriale della morte del Profeta Mosè: consolidamento delle fondamenta, del terreno e messa in posa delle strutture portanti la futura copertura della basilica.
9. Monte Tabor
- Preparazione del progetto di costruzione del nuovo parcheggio, del restauro dei viali d’accesso al Santuario, del grande terrazzo sopra la sacrestia e delle vetrate nella Cripta della Chiesa.
- Restauro di alcuni ambienti del Convento.
10. Nain
- Preparazione del progetto di costruzione del nuovo Convento nel Santuario di Nain dove Gesù ha risuscitato il figlio unico della vedova. Il progetto oltre la costruzione di nuovi ambienti prevede il restauro della Chiesa esistente, l’effettuazione di scavi archeologici e la risistemazione dell’intera area per l’accoglienza dei pellegrini.
II. Luoghi Santi/Comunità Locale
1. Opere in favore dei giovani
- Continuazione del progetto "Borse di Studio", che consiste nel finanziamento completo di Studi per la durata di quattro anni. Si tratta di 350 Borse di Studio Universitarie all’anno, distribuite nelle diverse università nella regione (Betlemme, Ebraica a Gerusalemme e Haifa, Bir Zeit, Amman ed altre).
- Continuazione del progetto di Sostegno alle imprese artigiane. Consiste nel sostenere circa 10 piccole imprese artigiane con l’acquisto di pezzi di ricambio, apparecchiature per la produzione, ausili per la messa in sicurezza delle attività.
2. Attività per le famiglie
- (Betlemme) Continuazione del progetto di sostegno alle famiglie organizzato dal Centro di ascolto parrocchiale e in coordinamento con il Franciscan Family Center (Consultorio familiare parrocchiale). Questo tipo di aiuto prevede un supporto socio-assistenziale ai bisogni principali delle famiglie.
- Casa Francescana del Fanciullo. Accoglie oltre 20 ragazzi dell’età tra i 6 e i 12 anni provenienti dalle famiglie povere e con diversi tipi di difficoltà. I ragazzi oltre che all’accoglienza e all’assistenza nello studio, sono seguiti da un educatore, un assistente sociale e uno psicologo. Il progetto si sviluppa in stretto contatto con il Franciscan Family Center.
- Continuazione del progetto di Assistenza medica. Il progetto agisce su diversi tipi di aiuto sanitario e si coordina sul territorio con il Franciscan Family Center, con la Caritas e con Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation. L’obiettivo principale è assicurare alle famiglie con difficoltà economiche una copertura, parziale o completa, delle spese mediche (acquisto farmaci, visite mediche e degenze ospedaliere).
- Progetto di restauro delle case appartenenti alle famiglie più bisognose. Il restauro viene effettuato da operai disoccupati. Oltre all’aiuto alle famiglie vengono creati periodicamente decine di posti di lavoro.
3. Comunità parrocchiali
- (Gerusalemme) Preparazione della seconda fase del progetto di rinnovazione degli edifici del Parish Center in Beit Hanina. Pagamento delle seguenti rate per il restauro ed ampliamento della chiesa.
- Parish Center a Nazaret. Completata ed inaugurata la costruzione di un centro parrocchiale per varie attività parrocchiali e sociali della Comunità cristiana della città (finanziata quasi completamente dai vescovi tedeschi e da Sua Santità Benedetto XVI), si prosegue con la costruzione dei campi sportivi per i giovani e con la preparazione di alcuni spazi ricreativi per i bambini.
- (Giaffa) Progetto di riorganizzazione e di preparazione dei nuovi spazi per le attività parrocchiali della comunità locale e delle comunità straniere (oltre ventiduemila fedeli) per la locale Parrocchia S. Antonio.
4. Scuole
- (Ramle) Ampliamento e restauro degli spazi della scuola esistente.
5. Costruzione di appartamenti per i poveri e per le giovani coppie
- The Franciscan Neighborhood in Jaffa. Si tratta di 124 appartamenti per famiglie cristiane della parrocchia. Ottenuti e pagati i permessi edilizi finali.
- Housing Project in Nazaret. È situato a 2 km di distanza dalla Basilica dell’Annunciazione. Oltre ad una Cappella ed alcune costruzioni per uso sociale prevede circa 80 appartamenti per rispondere alla necessità di abitazione per le giovani famiglie.
- Prosegue il restauro delle abitazioni nella Città Vecchia di Gerusalemme. Le antiche abitazioni, spesso del periodo ottomano, sono spesso in condizioni precarie e costringono gli abitanti al loro abbandono. Il Progetto prevede un progressivo rinnovo di circa 300 abitazioni. Nel periodo da dicembre 2008 a dicembre di 2009 sono stati rinnovati oltre 80 appartamenti.
6. Altre opere culturali
- Ogni anno la Custodia di Terra Santa sostiene economicamente la Facoltà di Scienze Bibliche e di Archeologia dello Studium Biblicum Franciscanum di Gerusalemme. Oltre al sostentamento completo dell’attività della Facoltà, vengono offerte a circa 30 studenti provenienti da diverse diocesi e istituti religiosi Borse di Studio che garantiscono per tutta la durata degli studi vitto ed alloggio.
- Franciscan Media Center. E’ una nuova forma di apostolato avente lo scopo di trasmettere attraverso network televisivi il messaggio dei Luoghi Santi e la vita delle comunità cristiane locali.
- Istituto Magnificat. In pochi anni di attività il Magnificat è diventata una scuola di musica capace di formare studenti provenienti da diverse culture e religioni. Ad oggi sono iscritti oltre 180 giovani guidati da 16 docenti. Il Magnificat promuove attività di ricerca e manifestazioni culturali a livello locale ed internazionale.
A tutto ciò si devono aggiungere anche numerosi interventi in Siria e Libano. In particolare segnaliamo il rifacimento della chiesa parrocchiale e del Convento di S. Francesco (Aleppo), concluso nell’ottobre 2009; la costruzione di 90 nuovi appartamenti e di un asilo infantile a Tripoli (Libano), in corso; il completo restauro del Convento a Tripoli, della chiesa di Latakiye (Siria), della casa delle suore e dell'asilo infantile a Jakubiye (Siria).

CUSTODY OF THE HOLY LAND

Summary Report 2008/2009
In fulfilling its age-old mission to safeguard the Holy Places of the Redemption, to officiate at worship in these places, to assist pilgrims and to build up apostolic works, in the years 2008/2009 the Custody of the Holy Land gave special attention to promoting and implementing the following projects and works:
I. Holy Places/Pilgrims
1. Ain Karem
- Completion of the restoration of the entrance to the Shrine of the Visitation. Archaeological investigations and excavations in the main square, total renovation of water and waste pipes, restoration of the long flight of steps that gives access to the Shrine.
- Completion of the project at the Shrine of St John in the Desert for the restoration of the ancient boundary wall and of several places for the reception of pilgrims desirous of a hermitage experience. Renewal of the entire electrical system.
2. Bethany
- Completion of the project for the restoration of the Convent of St Lazarus. Renewal of the electrical and plumbing systems and renovation of the floors in the Convent, in the sacristy and in the areas for the reception of pilgrims.
3. Bethlehem
- Project for the renewal of the lighting system in the Church of St Catherine, Bethlehem, together with the repainting of the whole church.
- Continuation of the restoration of the rooms in the Casa Nova with a view to the increasing number of pilgrims arriving.
4. Jerusalem
- Project for the restoration of the Chapel of the True Cross in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher and the installation of a new system for the protection of the walls.
- Project for the restructuring of the Kedron Valley between the Shrine and the walls of ancient Jerusalem, preparation of areas for the reception of pilgrims, for prayer and for meditation. The construction of two new complexes of services for the use of pilgrims.
- Preparation for the celebration of Holy Mass, celebrated by the Holy Father in the Kedron Valley.
- Restoration of the windows of the Basilica of the Nations. Preparation of the project for the restoration of the roof of the Basilica and the mosaics.
- Restoration of the Dominus Flevit Convent and of the project for restructuring the garden and areas for the reception of pilgrims.
5. Jaffa
- Completion of the second phase of the restoration of the Shrine of St Peter at Jaffa, consisting in the total renewal of the Convent’s interior and of areas for pastoral activities for Spanish-, French- and Polish-speaking foreign workers and for the Hebrew-speaking community.
- Start of the project for the restoration of the St Anthony Convent in Jaffa.
6. Magdala
- Conservation project in the archaeological area of Magdala. Restoration and consolidation of the remains found on the archaeological campaign in the 1970s. It also became necessary to lift, restore and transfer the pavement mosaics to adequate supports to protect them from atmospheric damage. A visitors’ itinerary is being prepared, specifically designed to illustrate daily life in the town at the time of Jesus.
7. Nazareth
- Complete restoration of the auditorium where His Holiness Benedict XVI was to hold a meeting with the religious leaders of Galilee. Preparation of the celebration at which the Pope presided in the upper Church. Completion of the restoration of the access routes for visits to the Shrine and for processions.
- Continuation of the restoration of the Grotto of the Annunciation.
- Preparation of the project for the roofing of the ancient church in Sephoris (which recalls the nativity and childhood of the Virgin); payment of the upcoming fees for permits to be obtained from the antiquities authority.
8. Mount Nebo, Jordan
- First phase of the work on the restoration of the Basilica, the memorial of the death of the Prophet Moses: consolidation of the foundations and of the site and installation of structures to support the roofing of the Basilica.
9. Mount Tabor
- Preparation of a project for a new parking lot and for the restoration of the access routes to the Shrine, of the large terrace over the sacristy and of the stained-glass windows in the crypt of the church.
- Restoration of some rooms in the Convent.
10. Nain
- Preparation of the project for the construction of the new Convent in the Shrine of Nain where Jesus raised the only son of the widow. In addition to the building of new accommodation, the project includes the restoration of the existing church, archaeological excavations and the reordering of the whole area for the reception of pilgrims.
II. Holy Places/Local Communities
1. Institutions for youth
- Continuation of the "Scholarships" project, which consists in providing full funding for studies over four years. There are 350 university scholarships per year, distributed in the universities of the region (Bethlehem, the Hebrew Universities in Jerusalem and Haifa, Bir Zeit, Amman and others).
- Continuation of the Support for Craft Enterprises project. It consists in supporting about 10 small craft enterprises with the purchase of spare parts, production equipment and aids to ensure the security of the activities.
2. Family-oriented activities
- (Bethlehem) Continuation of the project for the support of families organized by the Parish Aid Center and in coordination with the Franciscan Family Center (Parish Family Counseling Center). This type of aid includes social assistance to families in need.
- Franciscan Children’s Home. It takes in more than 20 children from 6 to 12 years old who come from poor families with a variety of problems. As well as being given hospitality and help in their studies, the children are supervised by an educator, a social worker and a psychologist. The project is carried out in close collaboration with the Franciscan Family Center.
- Continuation of the Medical Assistance project. The project takes care of various aspects of health care and is coordinated with the Franciscan Family Center, Caritas and the Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation. The main objective is to provide families in financial difficulty with full or partial coverage of medical expenses (purchase of medicines, visits to the doctor and hospitalization).
- Project for the restoration of houses or apartments that belong to the neediest families. The restoration work is carried out by unemployed workmen. In addition to the assistance to families, dozens of jobs are regularly created.
3. Parish communities
- (Jerusalem) Preparation of the second phase of the renovation project for the buildings of the Beit Hanina Parish Center. Payment of the bills for the restoration and enlargement of the church.
- Parish Center in Nazareth. With the completion and inauguration of a newly built parish center in Nazareth for the various parish and social activities of the Christian community in the town (almost completely funded by the German bishops and by His Holiness Benedict XVI), work continues with the construction of sports grounds for the young and the preparation of play areas for children.
- (Jaffa) Project for the reorganization and preparation of new spaces for the parish activities of the local community and for the foreign communities (over twenty thousand faithful) for the local St Anthony Parish.
4. Schools
- (Ramle) Enlargement and restoration of the existing school.
5. Construction of apartments for the poor and for young couples
- The Franciscan Neighborhood in Jaffa. There are 124 apartments for Christian families in the parish. The final building permits have been obtained and paid for.
- Housing Project in Nazareth. This is located 2 km from the Basilica of the Annunciation. In addition to a chapel and several buildings for social use, about 80 apartments are planned in response to the young families’ need for homes.
- The restoration of houses in the Old City of Jerusalem continues. These old dwellings which often date back to the Ottoman period are all too often in precarious conditions that oblige the inhabitants to leave. The project provides for a gradual renewal of about 300 houses. In the period from December 2008 to December 2009, more than 80 apartments have been renovated.
6. Other cultural institutions
- Every year the Custody of the Holy Land gives financial support to the Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum in Jerusalem. In addition to the full support of the Faculty’s activities, about 30 students from different dioceses and religious institutes are offered scholarships that guarantee them food and lodging for the whole of their study period.
- Franciscan Media Center. This is a new kind of apostolate whose aim is to broadcast through television networks the message of the Holy Places and the life of the local Christian communities.
- Magnificat Institute. In its few years of activity, the Magnificat has become a music school capable of training students from different cultural and religious backgrounds. Today more than 180 young people are enrolled, directed by 16 teachers. The Magnificat encourages research activities and local and international cultural events.
To all this must be added numerous interventions in Syria and Lebanon. We point out in particular the rebuilding of the Parish Church and Convent of St Francis, Aleppo, which was completed in October 2009; the construction of 90 apartments and a nursery school in Tripoli, Lebanon, which is underway; the complete restoration of the convent in Tripoli, of the church in Latakiye, Syria, of the sisters’ house and of the nursery school in Jakubiye, Syria.
