Su invito della Conferenza Episcopale d’Inghilterra e Galles (CBEW), il Cardinale Paul Josef Cordes, Presidente del Pontificio Consiglio Cor Unum, incontrerà i Vescovi d’Inghilterra e Galles, riuniti nella loro Assemblea Plenaria a Hinsley Hall, Leeds, dal 7 al 10 aprile 2008.

Scopo della visita è quello di dialogare con i Presuli, alla luce della prima Enciclica del Santo Padre Benedetto XVI, Deus caritas est, sulla promozione dell’identità cattolica delle organizzazioni caritative ecclesiali, in un contesto caratterizzato sia da mutamenti repentini che da nuove sfide poste al tradizionale impegno della Chiesa in questo campo. Sebbene la Chiesa in Inghilterra e Galles abbia raggiunto con opere efficaci quanti si trovano nel bisogno, i cambiamenti storici e culturali rendono necessaria una riflessione sul ruolo del Vescovo quale primario responsabile dell’attività caritativa della Chiesa.

Durante la visita, il Cardinal Cordes incontrerà anche i responsabili diretti dell’attività caritativa della Chiesa, sia nel paese che all’estero, e proprio allo scopo di incoraggiare una riflessione approfondita, nel pomeriggio di martedì 8 aprile, terrà una conferenza pubblica all’Istituto Maryvale dell’Arcidiocesi di Birmingham, impegnato nella formazione permanente e a distanza in teologia, evangelizzazione e catechesi.

At the invitation of the Episcopal Conference of England and Wales (CBEW), Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes, President of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, will meet the Bishops, gathered for their Plenary Assembly at Hinsley Hall, Leeds, from 7-10 April 2008.

The aim of the visit is to dialogue with the Bishops, in the light of the Holy Father’s first Encyclical Deus caritas est, on how to promote the Catholic identity of the Church’s charitable organizations in a rapidly changing environment, characterized by challenges to the Church’s traditional outreach in this field. While the Church in England and Wales has reached out to those in need in an efficacious way, historical and cultural changes warrant a reflection upon the role of the Bishop as the primordial locus for charitable activity.

In the course of his visit, Cardinal Cordes will also meet those directly responsible for the Church’s charitable activity, both at home and abroad. In order to encourage further reflection, he will also hold a public lecture catechesis on the afternoon of 8 April, 2008 at Maryvale Institute, Archdiocese of Birmingham, which is dedicated to lifelong and long-distance formation in theology, philosophy, evangelization, catechesis and religious education.
