Alle 18 di questo pomeriggio, dopo aver lasciato il Seminario di St. Joseph di Lviv, il Santo Padre si trasferisce nella Spianata di Sykhiv, davanti alla Chiesa della Natività della Madre di Maria, per l’incontro con i giovani.

Dopo il saluto al Papa di due rappresentanti dei giovani convenuti all’incontro, Giovanni Paolo II pronuncia l’omelia in lingua ucraina.

Ne pubblichiamo di seguito la traduzione in italiano e inglese:

1. "Signore, da chi andremo? Tu hai parole di vita eterna!" (Gv 6,68).

Carissimi giovani dell'Ucraina, l'apostolo Pietro pronunciò queste parole rivolto a Gesù, che si era presentato alle folle come il pane disceso dal cielo per dare la vita agli uomini (cfr Gv 6,58). Oggi ho la gioia di ripeterle in mezzo a voi, anzi di ripeterle a nome vostro e insieme con voi.

Oggi Cristo pone a voi la domanda che allora fece agli Apostoli: "Forse anche voi volete andarvene?". E voi, giovani dell'Ucraina, che cosa rispondete? Sono certo che, insieme a me, anche voi fate vostre le parole di Pietro: "Signore, da chi andremo? Tu hai parole di vita eterna!".

Guardandovi così numerosi ed entusiasti, il mio pensiero ritorna alla Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù, svoltasi a Roma nell'agosto dell'anno scorso e alla quale anche molti di voi hanno partecipato. Là ho invitato i giovani del mondo intero ad aprire un grande "laboratorio della fede", nel quale cercare e approfondire le ragioni per seguire Cristo Salvatore. Oggi viviamo un momento significativo del "laboratorio della fede" qui, nella vostra Terra, ove più di mille anni fa è giunto l'annuncio del Vangelo.

Ancora una volta, all'inizio del terzo millennio, Cristo ripete a voi: "Chi dite che io sia?" (Mt 16,15). Carissimi, il Papa è venuto tra voi per incoraggiarvi a rispondere: "Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente" (Mt 16,16); "Tu hai parole di vita eterna" (Gv 6,68).

2. Sì, carissimi giovani, Cristo ha "parole di vita eterna". Le sue parole durano per sempre e soprattutto ci aprono le porte della vita eterna. Quando Dio parla, la sue parole danno la vita, chiamano all'esistenza, orientano il cammino, riscaldano i cuori delusi e smarriti e in essi infondono nuova speranza.

Leggendo la Bibbia, scopriamo fin dalla sua prima pagina che Dio ci parla. Ci parla dando vita al creato: cielo, terra, luce, acque, esseri viventi, uomo e donna, tutto esiste per la sua parola. La sua parola dà significato a tutte le cose, sottraendole al caos. Per questo la natura è un immenso libro, in cui possiamo ricercare con meraviglia sempre nuova le tracce della divina Bellezza!

Più ancora che nella creazione, Dio parla nella storia dell'umanità. Egli rivela la sua presenza nelle vicende del mondo aprendo a varie riprese un dialogo con gli uomini creati a sua immagine, per creare con ciascuno una comunione di vita e d'amore. La storia diventa così un cammino di reciproca conoscenza tra il Creatore e l'essere umano, un dialogo che ha come scopo ultimo quello di condurci dalla schiavitù del peccato alla libertà dell'amore.

3. Così vissuta, la storia, cari giovani, diventa un cammino verso la libertà. Volete percorrere questo cammino? Volete partecipare anche voi a questa avventura? Il futuro dell'Ucraina e della Chiesa in questo Paese dipende anche da questa vostra risposta. Voi non siete soli in questo cammino. Fate parte del grande popolo dei credenti che si richiama ad un antico patriarca, Abramo. Egli ascoltò la chiamata del Signore e partì, divenendo per noi "padre nella fede", perché credette e si fidò del Signore che gli prometteva una terra e una discendenza.

Dalla sua fede discende il popolo eletto, che sotto la guida di Mosè affronta l'esodo dalla schiavitù d'Egitto verso la libertà della terra promessa. Al centro dell'esodo è posta l'alleanza del Sinai, basata sulle dieci parole di Dio: il "decalogo", i "dieci comandamenti". Sono "parole di vita eterna", perché valgono sempre e perché danno la vita a chi le osserva.

4. Cari amici! Un giorno un giovane, molto ricco, chiese a Gesù: "Maestro, che cosa devo fare di buono per ottenere la vita eterna?" (Mt 19,16). E Gesù gli rispose: "Se vuoi entrare nella vita, osserva i comandamenti" (Mt 19,17). Cristo non è venuto ad abolire la prima alleanza, ma a portarla a compimento. I dieci comandamenti hanno valore perenne, perché sono la legge fondamentale dell'umanità, scritta nella coscienza di ogni persona. Sono il primo passo verso la libertà e la vita eterna, perché osservandoli l'uomo si pone nel giusto rapporto con Dio e con il prossimo. Essi "esplicitano la risposta d'amore che l'uomo è chiamato a dare al suo Dio" (Catechismo della Chiesa Cattolica, 2083). Questa legge è scritta naturalmente nel cuore d'ogni essere umano e va fedelmente accolta ed eseguita. Deve diventare regola della nostra quotidiana esistenza.

Nel mondo d'oggi si verificano profondi e rapidi mutamenti sociali e tanti punti di riferimento morale vacillano, gettando gli uomini nel caos e talora nella disperazione. Il Decalogo è come una bussola, che in un mare agitato consente di non smarrire la rotta per giungere all'approdo. Ecco perché oggi vorrei simbolicamente riconsegnarvi i comandamenti del Decalogo, cari giovani dell'Ucraina, perché siano la vostra "bussola", il saldo punto d'appoggio per costruire il vostro presente e il vostro futuro.

5. "Amerai il Signore Dio tuo". A Dio va riconosciuto il primo posto nella nostra vita. Per questo i primi tre comandamenti riguardano il nostro rapporto con Lui. Egli merita giustamente di essere amato con tutto il cuore, con tutta l'anima e con tutte le forze (cfr Dt 6,5). Dio è unico, e non va scambiato con false divinità. Anche a voi, cari giovani, Egli dice: "Io sono il Signore tuo Dio, che ti voglio guidare alla pienezza della vita: non sostituirmi con qualcos'altro".

Oggi è forte la spinta a sostituire il vero Dio con falsi dei e fallaci ideali. Idoli sono i beni materiali. Se ricercati e utilizzati come mezzi e strumenti per il bene, essi ci sono di aiuto. Mai però debbono prendere il primo posto nel cuore dell'uomo, tanto meno del giovane, chiamato a volare alto, verso gli ideali più belli e più nobili!

Il nome di Dio è Padre, Amore, Fedeltà, Misericordia. Come non desiderare che tutti lo conoscano e lo amino? Il suo giorno - il Sabato, diventato per noi cristiani la Domenica, giorno della risurrezione del Signore - è anticipazione della terra promessa. Come non santificarlo con la partecipazione all'Eucaristia, incontro festoso della Comunità cristiana?

6. "Ama il prossimo tuo". Ai rapporti con il prossimo fanno riferimento gli altri sette comandamenti. Essi ci indicano la strada, per stabilire con gli altri esseri umani rapporti improntati a rispetto ed amore, sul fondamento della verità e della giustizia.

Chi mette in pratica questa legge divina, assai spesso si trova ad andare contro corrente. Giovani dell'Ucraina, Cristo vi chiede di camminare contro corrente! Vi chiede di essere i difensori della sua legge, e di tradurla in comportamenti coerenti nella vita di ogni giorno. Questa legge antica e sempre attuale trova nel Vangelo il suo perfetto compimento. E' l'amore che vivifica l'esistenza ed è a un amore vero, libero e profondo che conduce l'osservanza fedele dei dieci comandamenti. Con questa legge divina ben salda nel cuore, non abbiate paura: voi realizzerete in pienezza voi stessi e contribuirete all'edificazione di un mondo più solidale e più giusto.

7. Cari giovani, il vostro popolo sta vivendo un passaggio difficile e complesso dal regime totalitario che l'ha oppresso per tanti anni ad una società finalmente libera e democratica. La libertà, però, richiede coscienze forti, responsabili, mature. La libertà è esigente e, in certo senso, costa più della schiavitù!

Per questo, abbracciandovi come un padre, vi dico: scegliete la strada stretta, che il Signore vi indica attraverso i suoi comandamenti. Sono parole di verità e di vita. La strada che spesso sembra larga e comoda si rivela poi ingannevole e fallace. Non passate dalla schiavitù del regime comunista a quella del consumismo, un'altra forma di materialismo che, anche senza rigettare Dio a parole, lo nega però nei fatti, escludendolo dalla vita.

Senza Dio non potrete fare nulla di buono. Con il suo aiuto, invece, potrete affrontare tutte le sfide del momento presente. Riuscirete pure a compiere scelte impegnative, contro corrente, come ad esempio quella di rimanere con fiducia nella vostra Patria, senza cedere ai miraggi di facili fortune all'estero. Qui c'è bisogno di voi, giovani, pronti ad offrire il vostro contributo per migliorare le condizioni sociali, culturali, economiche e politiche del Paese. Qui c'è bisogno dei talenti di cui voi siete ricchi, per il futuro di questa vostra terra, che ha alle spalle un così glorioso passato.

Il futuro dell'Ucraina dipende in buona parte da voi e dalle responsabilità che saprete assumervi. Dio non mancherà di benedire i vostri sforzi, se imposterete la vostra vita sul servizio generoso alla famiglia e alla società, anteponendo il bene comune agli interessi privati. L'Ucraina ha bisogno di uomini e donne che si dedichino al servizio della società, avendo di mira la promozione dei diritti e del benessere di tutti, a cominciare dai più deboli e diseredati. Questa è la logica del Vangelo, ma è anche la logica che fa crescere la comunità civile. La vera civiltà, infatti, non si misura solo dal progresso economico, ma principalmente dallo sviluppo umano, morale e spirituale di un popolo.

8. Carissimi giovani! Ringrazio Dio che mi ha dato la gioia di incontrarvi. Prima di lasciarvi, vorrei aggiungere un'ultima parola: amate la Chiesa! E' la vostra famiglia ed è l'edificio spirituale di cui siete chiamati ad essere pietre vive. Essa presenta qui un volto particolarmente affascinante a motivo delle diverse tradizioni che l'arricchiscono. Con spirito di fraternità camminate e crescete uniti come oggi, affinché le tradizioni diverse non siano motivo di divisione, ma piuttosto stimolo alla conoscenza e alla stima reciproche.

Vi accompagni su questo cammino la Vergine Maria, tanto venerata qui in terra d'Ucraina. Amatela e ascoltatela. Lei vi insegnerà a fare di voi stessi un dono sincero e generoso a Dio e ai fratelli. Vi spingerà a cercare in Cristo la pienezza della vita e della gioia. Sarete così nella Chiesa la nuova generazione di santi della vostra terra, fedeli a Dio e all'uomo, apostoli del Vangelo anzitutto tra i vostri coetanei.

Il vostro cibo spirituale sia il Pane eucaristico, sia Cristo! Nutriti di Lui nell'Eucaristia, rimarrete sempre nel suo amore e porterete molto frutto. E se talora la strada si farà ripida, se il cammino della fedeltà al Vangelo vi apparirà troppo impegnativo, perché chiederà sacrifici e scelte coraggiose, ricordatevi del nostro incontro. Potrete così rivivere l'entusiasmo della professione di fede che oggi insieme abbiamo fatto: "Signore, da chi andremo? Tu hai parole di vita eterna!". Ripetetela e non temete! Cristo sarà la vostra forza e la vostra gioia.

Grazie, cari amici! Il Papa vi vuole bene e guarda a voi come alle sentinelle di una nuova aurora di speranza. Egli rende lode a Dio per la vostra generosità, mentre con affetto prega per voi e di tutto cuore vi benedice.

1. "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (Jn 6:68).

Dear young people of Ukraine, the Apostle Peter spoke these words to Jesus, who had presented himself to the crowds as the bread come down from heaven to give life to men (cf. Jn 6:58). Today I have the joy of repeating these words in your presence, indeed of repeating them in your name and together with you.

Today Christ asks you the same question that he asked the Apostles: "Will you also go away?". And you, young people of Ukraine, how do you reply? I am sure that with me you too will make your own the words of Peter: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life".

Seeing so many of you, and so enthusiastic, my thoughts go back to the World Youth Day which took place in Rome in August last year and at which many of you were present. There I invited the young people of the whole world to open a great "school of faith", a place in which to search for and examine more deeply the reasons for following Christ the Saviour . Today we are experiencing a significant moment of the "school of faith" here in your land, where the proclamation of the Gospel arrived more than a thousand years ago.

Once again, at the beginning of the third millennium, Christ asks you: "Who do you say that I am?" (Mt 16:15). Dear young people, the Pope has come among you to encourage you to answer: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Mt 16:16); "You have the words of eternal life" (Jn 6:68).

2. Yes, dear young people, Christ has the "words of eternal life". His words last for ever and above all they open for us the gates of eternal life. When God speaks, his words give life, they call things into existence, they direct our journey, they restore disappointed and broken hearts and pour fresh hope into them.

Reading the Bible, we discover right from the first page that God speaks to us. He speaks to us as he gives life to creation: the heavens, the earth, light, water, living things, man and woman, everything exists by his word. His word gives meaning to all things, rescuing them from chaos. For this reason nature is an immense book in which we can see with ever fresh wonder the traces of divine Beauty.

Even more than in creation, God speaks in the story of humanity. He reveals his presence in world events, by beginning time after time a dialogue with men and women created in his image, in order to establish with each one of them a communion of life and love. History becomes a journey in which the Creator and the individual come to know each other, a dialogue of which the ultimate purpose is to lead us out of the slavery of sin to the freedom of love.

3. Dear young people, when lived in this way, history becomes a path to freedom. Do you wish to travel this path? Do you too wish to be part of this adventure? The future of Ukraine and of the Church in this country depends also on your reply. You are not alone on this journey. You are part of a great people of believers who look back to an ancient Patriarch, Abraham. He heard the call of the Lord and set out, becoming our "father in faith", because he believed and trusted the Lord who promised him land and descendants.

From Abraham’s faith came the chosen people, who under the guidance of Moses undertook the exodus from slavery in Egypt to the freedom of the Promised Land. At the centre of the exodus is the Sinai covenant, based on the ten words of God: the Decalogue, the Ten Commandments. These are "words of eternal life", because they are always valid, and because they give life to those who observe them.

4. Dear friends! One day a young man, who was very rich, asked Jesus: "Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?" (Mt 19:16). And Jesus replied: "If you would enter life, keep the commandments" (Mt 19:17). Christ did not come to abolish the first covenant but to bring it to fulfilment. The Ten Commandments have permanent value, because they are the fundamental law of humanity, written in the conscience of every person. They are the first step to freedom and eternal life, because by observing them man places himself in a right relationship with God and neighbour. They "make explicit the response of love that man is called to give to his God" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2083). This law is written naturally in the heart of every human person and is to be faithfully accepted and carried out. It should become the rule of our daily life.

In today’s world we see profound and rapid social changes and many moral points of reference have become shaky, throwing people into confusion and sometimes despair. The Decalogue is like a compass in a stormy sea which enables us to keep on course and reach land. This is why today I wish to present the commandments of the Decalogue to you anew, young people of Ukraine, in a symbolic way, so that they will be your "compass", the solid point of reference for building your present and your future.

5. "You shall love the Lord your God." We must give God the first place in our lives. For this reason the first three commandments are concerned with our relationship with him. He rightly deserves to be loved with all our heart, with all our soul and with all our strength (cf. Dt 6:5). God is one, and he is not to be exchanged for false gods. To you too, dear young people, he says: "I am the Lord your God, I wish to lead you into the fullness of life: do not put something else in my place".

The pressure is strong today to replace the true God with false gods and deceptive aims. Material things are today’s idols. If they are sought and used as means and instruments of good, they are a help to us. However, they should never occupy the first place in man’s heart, even less in the heart of young people, who are called to fly high, towards the most beautiful and most noble ideals!

The name of God is Father, Love, Faithfulness, Mercy. How can we fail to desire that everyone should know and love him? His day – the Sabbath, which for us Christians became Sunday, the day of the Lord’s Resurrection – is an anticipation of the Promised Land. How can we not make it holy by taking part in the Eucharist, the festive meeting of the Christian community?

6. "Love your neighbour." The other seven commandments refer to our relations with our neighbours. They show us the path which enables us to establish relationships with other human beings marked by respect and love, based on truth and justice.

Those who put this divine law into practice often find themselves going against the current. Young people of Ukraine, Christ asks you to go against the current! He asks you to be defenders of his law and to put it into practice in proper behaviour in daily life. This ancient and ever valid law finds its perfect fulfilment in the Gospel. It is love that animates our lives, and it is to true, free and profound love that faithful observance of the ten commandments leads. With this divine law solidly rooted in your hearts, do not be afraid: you will be fulfilled and will contribute to the building of a world marked by greater solidarity and justice.

7. Dear young people, your country is going through a difficult and complex transition from the totalitarian regime which oppressed it for so many years to a society at last free and democratic. Freedom however needs strong, responsible and mature consciences. Freedom is demanding, and in a sense is more costly than slavery!

For this reason, as I embrace you like a father, I say to you: choose the narrow path that the Lord is showing you through his commandments. They are words of truth and life. The path that often seems wide and easy later shows itself to be deceptive and false. Do not go from the slavery of the Communist regime to the slavery of consumerism, another form of materialism which, without explicitly rejecting God, actually does deny him by excluding him from life.

Without God you will not be able to do anything good. With his help, however, you will be able to face all the challenges of the present moment. You will succeed in making demanding decisions, against the current, as for example the decision to stay confidently in your own country, without giving in to the illusions of an easy life abroad. You are needed here, young people, ready to make your contribution to improving the social, cultural, economic and political situation of your own country. Here the talents in which you are rich are needed for the future of your country, which has such a glorious history behind it.

The future of Ukraine depends in large part on you and the responsibilities that you will undertake. God will not fail to bless your efforts, if you commit your lives to generous service to family and society, placing the common good before private interests. Ukraine needs men and women dedicated to serving society, having as their aim the promotion of the rights and well-being of all, especially the weakest and most deprived. This is the logic of the Gospel, but it is also the logic that makes the civil community grow. True civilization, in fact, is measured not by economic progress alone but also and mainly by the human, moral and spiritual progress of a people.

8. Dear young people! I thank God who has given me the joy of meeting you! Before leaving you, I wish to add a final word: love the Church! She is your family and the spiritual building of which you are called to be the living stones. She appears with a particularly fascinating face here, on account of the different traditions which enrich her. In a spirit of brotherhood, go on your way and grow in unity as you are today, so that the different traditions will not be a reason for division but rather an encouragement towards knowledge and esteem of each other.

May the Virgin Mary, who is so greatly venerated here in the land of Ukraine, accompany you on this journey. Love her and listen to her. She will teach you to make a sincere and generous gift of yourselves to God and to others. She will inspire you to seek in Christ the fullness of life and joy. In this way you will be in the Church the new generation of saints of your land, faithful to God and man, apostles of the Gospel, above all among your own contemporaries.

Let your spiritual food be the Eucharistic Bread, Christ himself! Strengthened by him in the Eucharist, you will remain always in his love and you will bear much fruit. And if the path will sometimes be steep, if the path of faithfulness to the Gospel will appear too demanding, because it will certainly require sacrifice and courageous decisions, remember our meeting. In this way you will be able to relive the enthusiasm of the profession of faith that we have made together today: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." Repeat it and do not fear! Christ will be your strength and your joy.

Thank you, dear friends! The Pope loves you and sees you as the sentinels of a new dawn of hope. He praises God for your generosity, while he prays for you with affection and with all his heart he blesses you.

Otóż chcę wam powiedzieć to, co powiedziełm do całego Kościoła na koniec Wielkiego Jubileuszu Roku 2000: Duc in altum! Wypłyń na głębię! Nie poddaj się zniechęceniu, jakie może rodzić kryzys relacji społecznych, twoje własne niepowodzenia w poszukiwaniu sensu codzienności, czy jakiekolwiek inne uwarunkowania współczesnego świata. Nigdy nie trać z oczu Chrystusa! Wpatruj się w duchu w Jego oblicze - oblicze wcielonego Syna Bożego, Nauczyciela, Uzdrowiciela, udręczonego Sługi Jahwe, zmartwychwstałego Pana. Proszę was, zanieście moje pozdrowienie do waszych domów rodzinnych, szkół, miejsc pracy. Zanieście je waszym rówieśnikom. Wszystkich was noszę w moim sercu i otaczam modlitwą. Proszę Boga, abyście byli pokoleniem, które położy mocne podwaliny pod gmach wiary pokoleń trzeciego tysiąclecia. Niech Bóg wam błogosławi!
