Dal 3 al 6 dicembre, il Pontificio Consiglio della Giustizia e della Pace organizzerà un Seminario sul tema: Dalla riduzione del debito alla riduzione della povertà.
Scopo del Seminario è verificare i risultati delle numerose iniziative legate all’appello con cui il Papa Giovanni Paolo II proponeva "il Giubileo come un tempo opportuno per pensare, tra l’altro, ad una consistente riduzione, se non proprio al totale condono, del debito internazionale, che pesa sul destino di molte Nazioni" (TMA,51).
La risposta a questo appello, ripetuto in molte circostanze dal Santo Padre durante la preparazione e la celebrazione del Giubileo, è stata generosa e diffusa e si è concretizzata nella promozione di molteplici iniziative di base e in significativi impegni di governi e istituzioni internazionali.
Il Seminario del Pontificio Consiglio della Giustizia e della Pace intende concentrarsi sui modi in cui le iniziative di alleggerimento del debito possono portare a misure concrete di lotta alla povertà. Durante l’incontro si effettuerà la verifica dell’efficacia delle attuali Strategie per la Riduzione della Povertà e l’impegno, nell’elaborazione di tali strategie, delle varie articolazioni della società civile.
Parteciperanno al Seminario vescovi ed esperti di oltre 20 fra i paesi poveri fortemente indebitati insieme a rappresentanti di Organizzazioni cattoliche impegnate nel campo dello sviluppo. Dopo l’introduzione di S.E. Mons. François Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan, Presidente del Pontificio Consiglio, il dibattito sarà guidato da S.E. Mons. Diarmuid Martin. I relatori prenderanno in esame le questioni riguardanti l’attuale situazione debitoria dei paesi più poveri, la natura delle iniziative in atto per l’alleggerimento del debito e la riduzione della povertà, il ruolo e l’esperienza delle organizzazioni ecclesiali e le prospettive future.

From 3rd to 6th December, the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace will organise a Seminar entitled: From debt relief to Poverty Reduction.
The aim of the Seminar is to examine the results of the various efforts inspired by the appeal of Pope John Paul II to propose "the Jubilee as an appropriate time to give thought, among other things, to reducing substantially, if not cancelling outright, the international debt which seriously threatens the future of many nations" (TMA, 51).
The response to this appeal, repeated by the Holy Father on many occasions during the preparation and celebration of the Jubilee, was widespread and generous, and was concretised in the promotion of many popular initiatives as well as by significant commitment of governments and international institutions.
The Seminar of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace wishes to focus on ways in which debt relief initiatives can foster concrete measures in the fight against poverty. It will examine the effectiveness of the current Poverty Reduction Strategies and the involvement in these strategies of various elements of society.
Bishops and experts from over 20 of the heavily indebted poor countries will attend the Seminar, together with representatives of Catholic organisations involved in development. After the introduction by Archbishop Francois Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan, President of the Pontifical Council, the discussions will be led by Bishop Diarmuid Martin. Speakers will address questions concerning the actual debt situation of the poorest countries, the nature of current debt relief and poverty reduction initiatives, the role and experience of Church organisations and future prospects.
