PRIMATESTA Card. Raúl Francisco

Cardinal Raúl Francisco Primatesta, Archbishop emeritus of Córdoba (Argentina), was born on 14 April 1919 in Capilla del Señor in the archdiocese of La Plata (Argentina).

Upon completion of his studies at the archdiocesan seminary, he went to Rome where he obtained licentiates in theology and sacred scripture at the Gregorian University and the Pontifical Biblical Institute. He was ordained priest on 25 October 1942.

On his return to Argentina he was professor in Latin and Greek at the minor seminary. Thereafter, he went to the major seminary of San Jose where he was prefect general of discipline and professor of dogmatic theology and sacred scripture. Shortly, thereafter, he became rector.

He was elected titular bishop of Tanais and appointed auxiliary of La Plata on 14 June 1957, and was consecrated on 15 August. He was transferred to the residential see of San Rafael on 12 June 1961 and promoted to the see of Cordoba on 16 February 1965.

Created and proclaimed Cardinal by Paul VI in the consistory of 5 March 1973 of the Title of Beata Maria Vergine Addolorata a Piazza Buenos Aires (Blessed Mary Sorrowful Virgin).

Cardinal Raúl Francisco Primatesta died on 1 May 2006.
