GONZÁLES MARTÍN Card. Marcelo

Cardinal Marcelo González Martín, Archbishop emeritus of Toledo, was born on 16 January 1918 in Villanubla, the archdiocese of Valladolid, Spain. He studied at the metropolitan seminary and at the University of Comillas where he obtained a licentiate in theology. He was ordained priest on 19 June 1941.

He taught theology at the seminary of Valladolid and religion at the city university. He was also professor of sociology at the seminary, diocesan chaplain of the male branch of Catholic Action, and founder of the Patronato de San Pedro Regalado for the construction of houses for poor families.

He was appointed to the See of Astroga on 31 December 1960. He was promoted to the titular See pro illa vice archiepiscopal of Casae medianae, and appointed Coadjutor, with the right of succession of Barcelona on 21 February 1966. On 7 January 1967 he succeeded to the See of Barcelona and on 3 December 1971 was transferred to the Metropolitan See of Toledo.

Archbishop emeritus of Toledo, resigned 23 June 1995.

Created and proclaimed Cardinal by Paul VI in the consistory of 5 March 1973. Titular church, St. Augustine.

Cardinal Marcelo González Martín died on 25 August 2004.
