Credential Letters of the Ambassador of Peru to the Holy See, 16.02.2024

This morning, in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, Pope Francis received in audience His Excellency Mr. Luis Juan Chuquihuara Chil, Ambassador of Peru to the Holy See, on the occasion of the presentation of his credential letters.

The following is a brief biography of the new ambassador:

Ambassador of Peru to the Holy See

His Excellency Luis Juan Chuquihuara Chil was born on 10 November 1953, and is married with four children.

He studied letters (1971-1972) and law (1973-1976) at the Pontifical Catholic University in Peru, and was awarded a licentiate in international relations from the Diplomatic Academy of Peru (1979), a diploma in political studies from the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, France (1985-1986), and a master’s degree in public management at the International Institute of Public Administration (ILAP), Paris, France (1988-1989).

He has served as Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic, Head of Cabinet of the Presidency Council of the Magistracy, and political advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic.

He has also held various positions at the Presidency of the Republic, the Presidency of the Magistracy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Diplomatic Academy, and the National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs.

He has served at the Embassy of Peru in France (1983-1989); as Consul General in the United Kingdom (1996-2001); as ambassador in Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union based in Brussels (2005-2007); Ambassador in El Salvador and Belize (2007-2010); Ambassador in Switzerland and Liechtenstein (2013-2016); Ambassador and Permanent Representative at the Organizations of the American States (2016); Ambassador and Consul General in Chicago (2017-2018); Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and the International Organizations based in Geneva, the Swiss Confederation, UNEP and UN-HABITAT, based in Nairobi, Kenya (2021-2024).
